Proposed in Connecticut: a
special tax on internal combus-
tion engines at $2 per cylinder
annually for cars, trucks and
tractors, and one time only for
lawn mowers, chain saws, etc.
If you've been putting off buy-
ing new tires, remember that
replacing them is cheaper than
paying for an accident.
A "cold" temperature reading
after the engine has been run-
ning for 15 minutes may be
due to an inaccurate gauge, a
,, faulty thermostat or a defec-
tive heat valve.

NEW GROWTH STIMULANT
A growth stimulant implant
for beef cattle, recently approv-
ed for use in Canada, should be
a welcome aid to cattlemen,
according to research by Agric-
ulture Canada.
The Canadian beef industry
has been looking for a cheap,
effective growth promotant to
help check production costs
since the use of diethylstilbestrol
(DES) was suspended on January
1, this year.
The newly -approved product
is called Ralgro.
It can be used as an implant
to increase rate of gain in suckl-
ing and weaned beef calves,
growing beef cattle, feedlot
steers and feedlot heifers, but
is not to be used in breeding
animals or veal calves.
Unlike DES, its active comp-
onent, zeranol, is not a highly
potent sex hormone but a deriv-
ative of a chemical compound
extracted from corn mold. It
is also effective in heifers which
show no growth respond to sex
hormone implants.
Ralgro reportedly does not
produce the side effects that
may show up during the first
day or so of hormone implant
use.
Cattle treated with the impl-
ant tend to produce the leaner
carcasses currently in market
demand.
Current cost of the implant
to cattlemen is about 75 cents
per animal using a 36 milligram
dose. Implants are placed in
the animal's ear.
