Huron Torres accept Hellyer
Paul Hellyer termed the
policies of the Trudeau govern-
ment "disasterous" and "stupid"
at a Progressive Conservative
fund raising dinner at the Pine -
ridge Chalet, near Hensall last
Tuesday night.
Mr. Hellyer, former cabinet
minister under the Liberal
Trudeau government, told
more than 250 Huron County
Conservatives who had paid $15
a plate for the dinner, that the
Liberal government scheme to
stop inflation was "insanity."
"The Liberal government
succeeded in putting 300, 000
Canadians out of work unnec0-
essarily because of their tight
money policy."
As a result of the high un-
employment, many people who
can't get jobs blame themselves
and lose confidence and give
up, Mr. Hellyer said.
Canadians hoped that Trudeau
would no something different
for them when he came to pow-
er in 1968, he said. "Most
Canadians have become terribly
disillusioned with Trudeau."
Mr. Hellyer said that if infl-
ation is allowed to continue at
its present rate, a quart of milk
will cost $25 by the year 2000.
"The people on fixed incomes
will be hurt the most, " he
said.
Mr. Hellyer, who was making
one of his first speeches for the
PC since joining them last
month, said that Trudeau was
creating a welfare state. "When
a man with a family can make
more money on welfare than he
can working for the minimum
wage than something is wrong.

under Stanfield have to stop
this policy, Mr. Hellyer said,
and make "a policy of opport-
unity."
"There should be a new rel-
ation between production and
wages, " he said.
"The government should fin-
ance full employment for any-
one who wants to work, " he
said. "It may be necessary for
a wage and price freeze."
If the Conservatives form the
next government, they would
eliminate the cheating on the.

Mr. Hellyer said that some-
thing must be done to give
young people a chance "to opt
into the system."
He also faulted the Liberals
housing and transportation polic-
ies.
"The next election is the most
important in years, " he said.
Among those attending the
banquet were Huron MPP
Charles Mac Naughton and Huron
MP Robert McKinley.
Mr. McKinley repeated an
earlier announcement that he
would seek the riding's nomin-
ation in the upcoming federal
election.
He predicted a Conservative
victory, saying Prime Minister
Trudeau has alienated support
across the country.
