50 Years Ago
Mr. Russell Pretter has left
Zurich last week for Kitchener
where he has accpeted a posit-
ion with a large department
store.
An enthusiastic beekeeper in
Zurich, Jacob Haberer passed
away last Thursday in his 65th
year. He had been ill for only
a few weeks .
The paving of the main street
in the village of Hensall is now
a certainty and the work is to
start shortly, It is expected to
take only a few days to compl-
ete the job.
William Sherritt, of near
Grand Bend, while trying to takt
a pump out of a well, fell into
the well and was drowned. The
body was not found until some
hours later when his wife went
out looking for him.
Miss A. Consitt, who has
taught in the Hensall Public
School for a number of years,
has tendered her resignation on
account of her mother's illness.
Haines and Churry, the
battery who started the baseball
season with Zurich, are going
strong with the London team in
the Michigan-Dritario league,
winning most of the games
they take part in.
40 Years Ago
Mr. and Mrs. C. Pattinson,
of Detroit and Mr, and Mrs.
Alex McConnell of Varna, were
Sunday visitors at the home of
Mr, William Lamont.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ginger-
ich and her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. John Roth, of St. Agatha,
visited with relatives on the
Bronson over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed. J. Denomm.
of the Town Line motored to
Stratford and London, over the
weekend.
A very interesting game of
horseshoe was played on Sat-
urday evening when a team
from Hensall was out and played
the locals.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Swartz,
of Detroit spent the weekend at
the home of the latter's mother,
Mrs. J. Fuss. Their daughter
Eunice who spent several weeks
with her grandmother, is return-
ing to her home in Detroit with
her parents.
Mr. and Mrs. William Stein-
bach of Detroit and Mr. and
Mrs. D.H. Steinbach of Holly,
Michigan, are spending a week
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
R.F. Stade of town.
25 Years Ago
Harry G. Hess, proprietor of
the electrical supply store in
Zurich, has had his place of
business remodelled and enlarg-
ed, and has added four large
plate glasses to the building,
which makes the store equal in
appearance to any of the large
city stores.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Pfile,
of Dashwood, are enjoying an
extended motor trip through
United States and Western
Canada. The Pfiles are celebra-
ting their 25 years of being in
the shoe business in Dashwood
as well as being married for
25 years.
Dr. W.D. Bryce, a former
dentist is Zurich for a number
of years who has been practicing
in Sudbury, has left that city
for Ottawa, where he has taken
over a practice.
The Hensall Girl Guides are
enjoying a 10 -day camping
expedition at Camp Kitchigami,
near Goderich.
Mervyn Stephan, who has
been assistant station agent at
the CNR station in Hensall,
has been transferred to Clinton,
where he has been appointed
to the same position.
The Hensall-Zurich Combine
ball team helped their veteran
catcher, Bert Horton celebrate
his 41st birthday last Wednesday
by defeating the Clinton RCAF
team 5-4.

Victoria Park, at Stratford,
proved an ideal location for
the Schwalm family reunion on
Sunday, with some fifty
members of the clan present.
The second South Huron
County meeting of the 4-H
Home Garden Club Achieve-
ment Day was held in the Zur-
ich Community Centre on
August 29, with approximately
130 girls competing for prizes.
Mr. Jack Haberer returned to
Duke University, North Carol-
ina, after spending the summer

Mrs. Theresa Hartman of
the Goshen Line south has mov-
ed her effects in her fine new
home on Rosalie street.
A son (Barry George) was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon
Hess, of Zurich, at South Huron
Hospital, Exeter, on August
31, 1957.
10 Years Ago
Forty-five descendants of the
family of Mr. J.C. Hugill,
R.R.2, Seaforth, and the late
Mrs. Hugill, assembled at God-
erich Harbor Park for their
annual family picnic on Sunday.
With two victories over the
Hensall Generals in the past
week's activity, the Zurich
Lumberkings are currently lead-
ing their best of five playoff
series two games to one.
About 15 tons of salt was up-
set at a detour on the Bluewater
Highway, south of St. Joseph,
on Monday night, when a semi-
trailer truck from Sarnia toppled
over.
Relatives and friends feted
Hugh Love on his 75th birthday
at Riverview Park, Exeter, on
Sunday.
Russell Klopp, Richard Klopp,
and Jack Yungblut spent the
past weekend with Mr. and Mrs.
Victor Dinnin and Bill at their
cottage at Point Au Barii, in
the Parry Sound district.
