Suspend hydro strike talks
Negotiations between Ontario
Hydro and local 1000 of the
Canadian Union of Public
Employees were suspended
indefinitely August 14, by
provincial mediator Victor
Scott, nine days after the two
parties were called back to
the bargaining table by the
ministry of labor. Mr. Scott
gave no indication of when
talks might resume.
"During the nine days, the
number of outstanding items
was reduced from 177 to 110,
of the 67 settled, 16 were
changes over the last contract.
Hydro conceded on 15 items,
the union on one, " said Mr.
Palmer, manager of Hydro's
area. "The other 51 items
settled represented agreement
by both parties to live with
the provisions of the last cont-
ract." Local 1000 changed
its across-the-board wage
demand from 11 per cent for
a one year contract to nine
per cent for each year of a
two year contract, plus a
three per cent cost -of -living
clause throughout both years.
Hydro improved its wage
offer, which would have given
union members an average of
about 11 per cent over two
years, plus a three per cent
cost -of -living clause in the
contracts second year.
Negotiations between the two
parties were first suspended by
the provincial mediator June
20, the eve of the lengthy
strike.

At the weekend, almost
)2, 000 CUPE members were
still off their jobs across Ont-
ario. Last week, there was
heavy picketing in the Toronto
area where the union attempted
to put 3500 members back to
work. Hydro informed the union
that because of strike activity
across the province there was
not work available for every-
body at the present time.
Because there was not work for
all, the union withdrew its
offer.
"Much of the work done by
the Head Office staff in Toronto
said Mr. Palmer, "is initiated
by the 67 Area Offices, such as
our office in Clinton. These
offices have been struck for
more than a month and it's
easy to understand why there is
a lack of work for some of the
staff, " he added.
Locally, all trouble calls
have been handled with mini-
mal difficulty by supervisory
staff.
This week, striking employee:
were told by letter that cover-
age of their pension, life and
health insurance plans was
being maintained during the
strike. Deductions for the bene-
fits are being made when there
are sufficient earning to cover
