Plant containers
Most garden centers now offer
nursery stock in containers
which can be planted through-
out the growing season. The
containers are usually a type
that readily break down in the
soil. Therefore, pot and all
can be planted. Most plants in
containers can be planted in •
their permanent location with
little or no setback, even when
in full leaf and flower, says
D. B , McNeill, horticultural
specialist, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
The pots will rot away in
the ground, but it is best to
slash the sides of the pots in
three or four places. This allows
the roots to spread quickly into
the surrounding sail. The rim
of the pot should also be cut
away, just below the soil level.
If the rim is left on and prot-
rudes above the ground level,
the pot will act as a wick and
draw moisture away from the
plant's roots.
Plants must be removed from
metal or plastic containers at
planting time. Be careful not
to disturb the root ball.
