PAGE 6 ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Higher coverage under plan A new winter wheat insurance plan featuring coverage based on the grower's own individual exp- erience and yields has been dev- eloped by the Crop Insurance Commission of Ontario, The net result is an insurance plan that is much more attractive to high , producing growers following top management practices. Under this system a good grower bene- fits in two ways. As well as .starting at a higher level, his coverage automatic- ally increases at the same time as his insurable yield increases. This increase in protection from year to year takes place at no additional charge to the grower. The cost per acre for this new insurance is $2.00 for the low range coverage and $4.50 for high range coverage. However, with the additional assistance to Crop Insurance recently announced by the Hon, William A, Stewart, Minister of Agriculture and Food, the Ontario and Federal Govern- ments will pay half the preiniuir costs, leaving the insured grow- er with a price of only $1,00 per acre for low range coverage and $2.25 per acre for high range coverage. The new plan offered this year also contains bonus benefits at no extra cost to the farmer, such as a reseeding payment on acreage damaged by winter -kill and increased protection against loss where wheat is reduced in grade due to a weather hazard. Applications for winter wheat insurance must be made with the local Crop Insurance agent on or before October 1. County Agricultural offices can supply interested growers with additional information and refer them to their nearest agent. A new mini grade potato is available in Ontario stores, report food spec- ialists at the Ontario Food Coun- cil, Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food. Prized for those special company din- ners, the mini potato is perfect for serving as parslied potatoes, with a sauce, in stews, meat pies, soups or on a shish kebab. It was only after many de- mands by consumers for small potatoes that the Fruit dnd Vegetable Growers Association decided to give them a trial run in 1971. As potatoes in Ontario must be sold under grade regul- ations, a new grade was introd- uced. The mini -grade potato ranges in size from 0 ip to 1 3/4 inches. It must be well shaped, clean, and free from defects. The package is labeled Ontario Mini Grade. There also have been new packaging regulations set, The mini -potato grade will be avail- able only in transparent plastic bags, boxes, or baskets, This packaging allows the consumer to see exactly what she is buying. It also prevents accidental pur- chase of mini potatoes instead of regular -sized potatoes. The transparent bags, available in 1-2-3-5- and 10 -pound sizes, will contain only washed potatoes Mini potatoes sold in baskets or boxes are either washed or brush- ed. The boxes or baskets will be available in 1 pint, 1-, 2-, 4, - and 6 -quart sizes. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1971 Consumer acceptance of the new mini grade will be reviewed in the spring of 1972, If accept- ance is good, the mini grade will become ,permanent. If consumer acceptance is low, it's good-bye to small potatoes.
