II cutting
reduces yield
In Ontario, cutting or grazing
alfalfa during certain fall per-
iods will lower the next year's
yield or even cause winterlcill.
This critical fall harvest date
is very important for a healthy
crop.
Alfalfa and other perennial
forages must store food reserves
to prevent them from dying
over the winter. These reserves
make the plant resistant to low
winter temperatures and also
help to initiate growth in the
spring.
To store the most plant food,
alfalfa should not be grazed or
cut for three weeks before or
after the critical fall harvest
date. This date varies througiiout
Ontario, from about October 1
in the southerly alfalfa -growing
regions to approximately Sept-
ember 10 in the more northerly
areas.
After several severe frosts, late
fall browsing can be resumed,

Independent candidate still
in race for Huron riding
Despite an announcement by
the New Democratic Party of
Ontario that it has upheld the
suspension of Ed Bain by the
Huron Riding Association of the
party, Mr. Bain announced he
intends to seek a seat in the
upcoming provincial elections
anyway.
He indicated that he intends
to run as an 'Independent NDP'
as he had previously suggested.
Mr. Bain, 54,• who unsuccess-
fully sought the party nomination
for the Huron Riding, said the
suspension was in effect until he
withdrew his candidacy. He went
on to say that he had no intent-
ion of withdrawing that candid-
acy. ,—
The suspension handed down
comes under an article of the
party constitution known as a
disciplinary section. Previously,
when announcing his candidacy
as an independent, Mr. Bain
levelled serious charges against
the NDP riding association in
Huron and termed therm polit-
ically inept."
Mr. Bain was defeated at the
nomination meeting held in
June by Goderich Reeve Paul
Carroll, 27, an elementary
school teacher, who won by
virtue of a 29-14 vote.
The independent candidate
says he knows of no law that
forbids him using the NDP label
even though the Riding Associat-
ion and the party in general does
not approve.
