Christmas is drawing near,
and for all who lacked the Christ-
mas Spirit, the weatherman has
been doing all in his power to
create a Christmas atmosphere.
Most of our decorations are now
up, thanks to Miss Meda Surerus
who has livened up the windows
with her Christmas scenes, and
other staff members for their
assistance.
Because of the annual Christ-
mas Dinner for the Board Memb-
ers and their wives on Tuesday
evening, film night was held on
Monday instead. The pictures
shown were "Enduring Wilderness,
pictures of some of Canada's
National Parks, "Christmas
Cracker, " a cartoon and "High-
land -Heart of Nova Scotia, " a
story of the first Scottish Settlers
in the Maritime Provinces.
On Thursday evening the
monthly birthday party was spon-
sored by the Church of God,
Grand Bend. From all reports, an
enjoyable evening was had by all.
Mr. George Winegarden and
two children, Jacqueline and
Jimmie sang a trio, also the
Steckle family, Kenneth, Cathy
and Douglas. Both Mothers of
these children are on the staff
of the Home, and so are of part-
icular interest to the residents.
Mrs. Wattam fascinated the aud-
ience with her renditions of
carols on her vibra-harp. All of
the other members presented by
the guests were thoroughly enjoy-
ed and appreciated by the resid-
ents. A delicious lunch was
served, complete with birthday
cake, honouring the December
birthday celebrants, Mrs. Dora
Waghorn, Miss Mary Ann Steckle
and Mr. Harold Gower.
On Saturday evening, we were
pleased to have our Salvation
Army friends visit the home.
They distributed a treat to each
resident, and their carol singing
was enjoyed by everyone.

Rev. Harold Currie, of Hensall
United Church was the guest
minister for the Sunday evening
chapel service. Mrs. Lenora
Turkheim, organist, and her
choir members rendered special
music and accompanied the
residents in the singing of the
hymns.
Perhaps you heard the request
on "Open Line" for cardboard
cylinders on which wrapping
paper is rolled. This request was
made by the Cancer Clinic,
London, who use large numbers
of these to roll and mail reports.
Perhaps you could save yours
and either mail them or deliver
them on some future trip to
London.

Stanley Couple
Married 50 Years
PAGE SEVEN
On December 4, 1920, a
quiet wedding tool< place at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. John D.
Steckle of the Bronson Line,
Stanley, when their oldest
daughter, Lovina, was united
in marriage to Menno`Martin,
youngest son of Mr. and Mrs.
Tobias Martin, R.R.3, Waterloo,
The ceremony was performed
by Bishop Ezra L. Martin, of
St, Jacobs.
The Martins had a family of
four sons and four daughters;
Velina, Mrs. William Oesch,
R. R.1, Varna; Emma, Mrs.
Enos Buringer, Hamilton; (she
died in November, 1957 at the
age of 33.); Albert, of Kitchen-
er; Harvey, R.R.3, Bayfield,
Alma, Kitchener; Luella, Mrs.
John Zandwyk, R.R.2, Zurich;
Irvin, of Zurich; and Melvin, of
Bayfield.
Mr. Martin recalls that a few
days prior to the wedding, he
set out from his parental home,
two miles south east of Heidel-
burg, with horse and buggy,
starting out about 3 p.m. on a
Friday and spending the night
with friends at Poole, then
driving the rest of the way Sat-
urday.

Since good firm berries bounce
and soft berries don't, cranber-
ries are bounce -tested on wood-
en barrels to ensure that only
the lively ones go to market.
Lively cranberries store well,
freeze well, and make the best
sauces, pies and desserts.
Buy plump dry, firm berries
with a higher luster. Avoid
berries that are soft and shriveled,
with a dull appearance, as they
have passed their prime.
Fresh berries keep well at
home. Before storing, home

economists suggest you remove
any shriveled berries. Cranberries
are easy to freeze - just pop
them in the freezer, in the
plastic bag in which they're sold.
They do not need to be defrosted
before use. They even maintain
their jelling qualities after
freezing.
This tart fresh berry is much
in demand because of its many
uses, Cranberries may be diced
for a salad, cooked in a sauce,
baked in a pie with apples and
raisins or mincemeat, added to
stuffing for turkey, combined
with peaches and pears in a mold-
ed salad, or used in relishes.
