Urea for Ruminant
(This message is brought to
you through the courtesy of the
Hensall District Co -Operative)
Last week we made some gen-
eral observations about the use
of urea in ruminant feeds. The
challenge is to speed up the use
of ammonia formed from urea,
or slow down ammonia formation
The challenge may be met
using the following methods,
when you feed urea in feeds.
1. Provide your cows with a
readily available source of en-
ergy, such as starches and sugars
in corn, oats, wheat and molas-
ses. This will speed up the use of
ammonia by the cow.
2. You will need a feed bal-
anced for calcium, phosphorous
and salt. Phosphorous is import-
ant to enable rumen bacteria to
use urea. And if these above
minerals are added, you must
also have proper levels of trace
minerals, especially cobalt,
zinc and sulphur.
3. Dehydrated alfalfa meal or
distiller grains can supply unid-
entified factors which cause
bacteria to grow and multiply
faster.
4. Feed urea -containing feed
regularly as it takes 2 or 3 weeks
for the cattle to adjust.
5. Urea use is increased by
adequate levels of vitamins A
and D and other feed additives.
6. Ruminant rations require
certain levels of protein depend-
ing on age and kind of productiot
expected (meat or milk). If the
protein fed meets the animal's
total needs, then additional prot-
ein from urea will be poorly
used.
7. Urea should not supply
over one-third of the total ration
nitrogen.
8. Urea is not cummulative
in the ruminant body, so daily
intake won't build up to toxic
conditions in cattle. But a single
large over -dose could be toxic
under certain conditions e.g.
the cattle not accustomed to
urea, rate of consumption, feed-
ing frequency, etc.
Zurich Combines
Down Listowel
Tuesday night saw the Zurich
Intermediate C entry take anoth•
er of several victories as they
downed Listowel 4-3.
Zurich opened the scoring in
the first period about the mid-
way mark as Chuch Humby '
scored on a passing play from
Fred Lamb.
Listowel went on the score
sheet at the 17:30 mark of the
second period only to see Kevin
McKinnon come back 17 seconds
later and put Zurich ahead ag-
ain.
Just 36 seconds into the final
period saw Bob Merner put Zur-
ich into a two goal lead. From
here on it seemed as if Zurich
had taken over as Glen Over-
holt gave Zurich a 4-1 lead
with less than 10 minutes left.
However, Listowel was able to
slip two more goals by Rick
Jeffrey to narrow the gap to
4-3.
