Energy Protein in Poultry Feeds
(This message brought to you
through the courtesy of Hensall
District Co -Operative.)
Energy is i_r portant to the nut-
ritionist for several reasons. It
Ls a common denominator for
evaluating total nutritive value
of feeds; energy intake is implic-
ated with appetite and control
of food and/or feed consumption;
and units of energy (kilo-caleries
or mega -calories) are often used
to measure overall feed to food
conversion efficiency.
The energy derived from an
ingredient is the sum total of
the amounts of energy contributed
by each of its "nutrient" comp-
onents. Different feedstuffs have
been analyzed for energy cont-
ribution and some interesting
results obtained.
For example, Nitrogen Free
Extract provides the major
source of energy in corn, as
well as other grains. Protein
provides a smaller amount of
energy. So factors that might
change the N.F.E. of grains,
would tend to have the greatest
effect on the final metaboliz-
able energy content.
Alfalfa, on the other hand,
derives most of its energy from
the crude protein (47.9g0) and
N, F. E. (46.931). But the energy
content is adversely affected by
the level of crude fibre.
High protein ingredients like
soya meal, corn gluten meal
and fishmeal have a relatively
low crude fibre content. So
protein concentration in these
has a sizable affect on the total
energy content.
However, there is sufficient
evidence to show that it is econ-
omically unsound to overfeed
protein in poultry rations, as a
source of energy. Also, nutrit-

ionists have found that metabol-
izable energy influences total
intake of feed by poultry. This
fact has prompted the relating
of nutrient concentrations to
the energy levels of the ration.
This has opened up new approa-
ches to practical feed formula-
tion.
