News Along
Summer 19'70 has come to an
end and visitors and cottagers
along the Blue Water Highway
have returned to homes in cities
and towns to renew the daily
pursuits of school, work and
housekeeping.
The first weekend after Labor
Day brought a few back to their
cottages to enjoy weather which
was fair and warm, ideal for
an outdoor barbecue.
Our column is becoming
smaller because of the lack of
news and we would ask again
for cooperation from any visitors
to the Blue Water area to let us
know when you're down for a
weekend or visiting in the area.

Corn Problem!
There won't be many corn
growers in Ontario who don't
know about the southern leaf
blight hitting farmers grain corn
in North America this year. In
Ontario it's mostly affecting
Essex and Kent county corn crops,
The greatest damage will come
where the disease is alread y
established. And the difficulty
about this blight is that once it
hits your crop, you can't do
much about it.
But there are other kinds of
problems that the corn grower
needs to pay attention to right
now.
The northern corn rootworm
infestation is heavy in Essex,
Kent, Elgin, Lambton, Middle-
sex and west Oxford counties,
says the Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food. But as
continuous corn cropping in-
creases from year to year, the
rootworm distribution will spread
Light infestations have been
found throughout Western Ontaric
west of Simco and York Counties
Now is a good time to assess
the damage in your cornfield
from this pest. Look for the adult
beetles on the ears in your corn-
field. Also look for elbowed or
"goosenecked" stalks. If you
have many of these (107o would
mean a heavy infestation) check
the roots of the damaged plants
for rootworms to confirm the a
damage is caused by the pest.
Control is either by crop rot-
ation or chemical treatment
next spring with a soil insectic-
ide, or both.
Another corn pest that has
plagued corn crops over the years
is the European Corn Borer. •
Check your corn cobs now before
harvesting the crop, for damage.
Control is costly when done
by chemical spraying early in
the plant growth stage and of
course -- too late anyway fot
this year. But by cutting corn
for silage very low in tie stalk,
you will remove more borers
from the field. Deep clean fall
plowing of the cornfield will
also help control the insect.
And while you're doing this, it
is good to put into effect your
fall fertilizer plow -down pract-
ice. It's the time to add phos-
phates and potash to your soil.
Mrs. Eva Holbrooke, of Det-
roit came down to pick up her
mother, Mrs. Louise Garitin, St.
Joseph and Mrs. Anna Primeau,
of Chicago.
Mrs. Robert Mernovage, of
Detroit, is spending a week in
St. Joseph getting ready to close
up their cottage down at Duch-
atme Beach.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Brisson
and family, Mr. and Mrs. Nap
Carvin, and Robert, all of Det-
roit spent the weekend at their
cottage in St. Joseph.
Mr. and Mrs. Toriy Regier,
Sharon and Tony, of Detroit,
were at their cottage at Sunset
Cove.
Mr. Louis Ducharme is a pat-
ient in South Huron Hospital. We
would like to wish him a very
speedy recovery.

Dental Scientists
Predict Control
Of Tooth Decay
Dental scientists are optimist-
ic that complete control of tooth
decay may be a reality within
10 to 20 years. They recently
reported on a number of studies
that produced significant results.
One of the most promising
involves use of an enzyme called
dextranese to control decay.
The experiment has yet to be
conducted with humans.
This enzyme apparently attack
a bacterial product associated
with decay. This product is cal-
led dextran and is involved in
the forming of tartar. Because
tartar sticks to the teeth, it
provides a nest for bacteria whict
produce the acids that attack
teeth.

Scientists believe that the
enzyme can destroy dextran,
causing tartar to break down
and much fewer cavities to re-
sult.
Several other studies invovle
the use of multiple fluorides to
prevent decay. Fluorides have
been proven highly effective
against tooth decay. Countless
studies show that children who
'have been drinking fluoridated
water since birth have as much
as 65 per cent less decay than
,children who do pot receive
the benefits of fluoridation.
Fleforidated water, combined
'with two other fluoride uses,
have slashed decay up to 90
per cent. The other uses are
direct application of fluoride to
.teeth and regular brushing with
a fluoridated dentifrice. Use of
these techniques has been gain-
ing in popularity. Recently a
special fluoride treatment dent-
ifrice became available for
brushing under supervision on a
mass scale by children. These
"brush -ins" can be used by
;large groups of people in maint-
aining good oral health.
