Welcome to the .. .
ZURICH BEAN FES'T'IVAL
Delicious home -baked pork
and beans with all the trimmings
will be the feature attraction
this year at the fifth annual Bean
Festival, which is scheduled for
this Saturday, August 22, Activ-
ities are scheduled to get under
way at noon, and continue on
throughout the rest of the day,
Close to 10, 000 people are ex-
pected to attend the all -after
noon and evening programs. Vis-
itors are expected from marry
cities in the United States and
Canada, from such centres as
Detroit, Toronto, Hamilton,
Kitchener, London, Stratford
and Sarnia.
Since Zurich is located in the
centre of a rich bean -growing
area, many of the visitors will
avail themselves of the opport-
unity to visit local farms where
beans are the major crop. Wag-
ons will be available to transport
these people to where beans are
being grown in large quantities.
Due to the lateness of the season
this year, it is doubtful if any
bean harvest ing will be ready
at this time.
The beans will be cooking in
old-fashioned iron kettles right
in view of the crowd, Visitors
will be able to eat their meals
at picnic tables spread throughout
the main business areas of the
village. While most of the activ-
ity will centre around the down-
town area, there will also be
horseshoe tournaments taking
place at the Zurich park. Several
ladies' groups and church organ-
izations will have bazaars and
food stands in the streets, and to
add to this there will be pony rides
for the children, Other activities
include checker and solo comp-
etitions in the Township hall.
Another feature of the festival
this year will be an outstanding
program of entertainment through
out the afternoon and early even-
ing.
The Zurich Centennial Band
will provide musical entertain-
ment as well. A portable stage
will be set up on Mill Street,
where all the entertainers will
perform.
A long with the serving of
home-made pork and beans, there
will be street markets set up of-
fering for sale such items as
home-made pies, home -trade
sausage, home-made bread,
home-made cheese, honey, fresh
fruit and all type of vegetables.
A newly -added feature this
year will be a visit to Green Acres
Farm, located just a couple of
miles from the village. Visitors
will be taken to the farm on buses
and will be given rides on tractor
and horse-drawn vehicles on their
arrival. They will be able to see
all the stars of the popular tele-
vision show portrayed, and can
also visit the famous Drucker's
Store at Green Acres Farm. This
promises to be one of the most
popular additions to this year's
Festival.
This year the Bean Festival
dance will be held on Friday
night, as a prelude to the festival
itself. At the Friday night dance,
a "Bean Queen" will be chosen,
and she will reign over the fest-
ival on Saturday. Any girls

years ago by a group of public-
spirited citizens of the community

the whole -hearted support of all
organizations and public-spirited
citizens of the area, and all vis-
itors are assured of an enjoyable'
tour of the heart of the bean
growing belt of Western Ontario.
Again this year, the central
area of the village will be block-
ed off to forst a mall, Area mer-
chants and organizations will
have displays along the mall and
visitors are invited to visit these
displays.
Zurich Residents
Welcome Visitors
The residents of the village of
Zurich extend a welcome to you
when you attend the fifth annual
Bean Festival, and hope your
visit to the community will re-
main in your memories for years
to conte.
Zurich was first organized in
1856 by a Swiss, named Frederick
Knell. Shortly after this a post
office was opened and later a
store, a grist mill and a saw mill,
Mr. Knell became active in the
early life of Zurich and served
four years as reeve of Hay Town-
ship. Ills wife taught the first
school in the area.
Within ten years of its founding,
Zurich acquired a population of
300 people. Today the population
of the village is about 750. After
25 years of existence the com-
munity had a daily mail service
to and from 1 lensall, as well as
its own telegraph service. Tt was
the largest settlement in l lay
Township.
In 1956 Zurich celebrated it's
centennial, and an old boy's
reunion was held for four days,
to ntarl< the event. Thousands of
former residents visited their old
home town during this celebration.
All this time Zurich was a
police village, in the Township
of I lay. 'in 1959 the village trustee
decided it was time to incorporate
Zurich as a village, and the of-
ficial incorporation began in Jan-
uary of 1960. The village now

has a reeve and four councillors,
while previously governed by a
three-man police village trustee
board, under the jurisdiction of
Hay Township,
When you visit the village dur-
:ing the Bean Festival, talk to
(some of the older residents, and
ask them about the interesting
history of the community, where
most of the residents are of Ger-
man or French descent.
LIGHTER TALKS
The Bell system uses about
400,000,000 pounds of copper
every year for wire. Uncertainty
about cost and supply has lead
to investigation of aluminum as
a possible alternative. Signs are
'that it could be satisfactory and
trials are expected to bear this
out.
