Minister Seeks Suggestions on
Region's Social and Economic Need's
The people of the four -county
Midwestern Region of Ontario
have been invited to comment
on the government's analysis of
the region's social and economic
needs.
The Hon. Charles MacNaughton
Provincial Treasurer and Minister
of Economics, said in presenting
the report in Listowel, that the
government's development prop-
osals for the region would not be
established until there is plenty
of opportunity for the people in
the region to respond to them and
to consider them in terms of their
own local interests and to make
known how they would be affected
and what are the best ways of
carrying them out.
"'These broad provincial plans,
and the provincial policies that
will influence the shaping of
local plans, are not proposals
that are being imposed from on
high."
"We are particularly interested
in suggestions from you about
the priorities and long-range
proposals for the development of
the region, " the minister said.
"We would like your opinions
about the needs and priorities for
each zone of the region, item by
item, in the kind of detail that
will enable us to bring together
into an overall program a detail-
ed system of planning policies
and priorities for the region.
"We would like your views on
transportation systems, on lanes
use, on recreation areas, on urban
growth and centres of influence,
on education needs, on health
care facilities, in short on all of
the matters dealt with in the re-
port."
Mr. MacNaughton set out three
questions the government would
like to have answered. They are:
1. Do you agree with our select-
ion of the problems and needs
for the region? If not, which
should be de-emphasized or ex-
cluded, and which should be ad-
ded? 2. What comments do you
have regarding the priorities set
out in the report? 3. What ideas
and information of particular
significance from a regional or

Strawberry Plants
Need Care Now
Now that the harvest of June -
bearing strawberry varieties are
over, the planting may be ren-
ovated for next year's crop, Hort-
iculturists with the Ontario Dep-
artment of Africulture and Food
advises that only vigorous, virus -
free plants be kept.
The planting should be mowed
off with a rotary lawn mower
which is set so that the crowns
are not injured. When the leaves
are dry, fertilize with about 2
pounds of 8-16-10 or 10-10-10
per 100 square feet. Water well
to carry the fertilizer deep down
into the soil.
If the planting is to be kept for
several years it is advisable to let
the runners grow. Then the orig-
inal plants can be plowed down

Tractors, combines, balers, corn pickers and ether machines
have made farmers much more efficient.
But the increasing use of machinery has been paralleled by a
frightening increase in farm accidents.
• More Canadians are killed • Accidental deaths involving
in farming than in any farm machines have doubled
other single industry.. over the all st 10 years.
•• The accident rate on • 20% pe
farms is 20% above the killed in farm accidents
national average. are under the age of 10.
But machines do not cause accidents.
Farmers do.
• Less than 5% of farm accidents are caused by mechanical
failure .
• More than 93 % are caused by carelessness .
A thoughtless act, refusal to use safety features like tractor
roll bars and power take -off shields, and allowing children to
operate, ride on or play near machinery are among the principal
causes of farm accidents.
