Zurich Citizens News, 1970-07-09, Page 10PAGE TEN 50 Years Ago JULY, 1920 Mrs. Lindsay Wurm, of Detroit, is spending sometime visiting with relatives in the Zurich dist- rict. Mrs. V. Siebert who has been engaged as a milliner in Wing - ham for the past season has ret- urned to her home here in Zurich.. On Monday, at Goderich, Zurich baseball team lost anoth- er game, by a score of 4-2. The Goderich team was considerably strengthened for the match, and owing to some very questionable umpiring, the score was so ar- ranged as to be in favour of the Goderich team. Herb Mousseau has installed a free air outfit at his garage, and anyone can take advantage of this new service. The Missess Veolo and Marg- uerite Prang are spending their holidays in Detroit. Mr. Willia;n Callas has recent- ly purchased a new Ford touring car, and this should add greatly to his service of conveying pas- sengers. Miss Lottie Galster who has been employed in Bowmanville as a milliner has returned to her home in Zurich. Mr, Egbert Heideman is the proud owner of a new Chevrolet "Baby Grand" car, which he pur- chased from E. E. Tiernan in Dashwood. Many from this district attend- ed the UFO picnic at Grand Bend July 5. 40 Years Ago JULY, 1930 The Smith family relation held their annual family reunion picnic at Grand Bend on July 1st, with forty-seven people enjoying the celebration. Children's Day was fittingly and well observed in the Evangel- ical Church on Sunday, when special and suitable programs were rendered for the occasion. Mr. Gordon Rau, and sister, Miss Merle Rau, of Detroit are visiting at their home here. Mr. George Thiel, liveryman, has invested -in a new 3 -ton Chev. Heavy Duty truck, which he will use for business. Miss Anna Overholt" who spent a week in Goderich, has now returned to her home in Zurich. Mr. and Mrs. H. Yungblut were visiting with friends at Kit- chener, the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Chester L. Smith and daughter Mae, made a bus- iness trip to London on Friday.. Mr. Harold Newcomb, ofGod- erich, was a Tuesday visitor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Weido. Mr. John Schilbe and son, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schilbe, of Detroit, were Sunday visitors with the former's sister, Mrs. Cy Colosky, and other;_relatives. Mr. M, R, Rennie, of Seaforth, called in town on Monday. 25 Years Ago Rev. Mr. Grant, of Kippen and Hillsgreen charges, has preached -his farewell sermon on Sunday last, and left for his new charge in Bothwell. Rev. Mr. Down will fillin for him until a new minister is located. Stanley Smith and Lorne K1opp are away up north on a fishing trip this week. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Mousseau and daughters are enjoying this week camping at Turnbull's . Grove. Mrs. Peter Schwalm, of Hensall has received in the mail a pair of Dutch shoes sent to her by her son, Austin, who is stationed in that country with the 98th Battery Fourth Anti- Tank. Tenders are being called for the hard -surfacing of Highway from Russeldale to the Bluewater - OF- YEARS GONE - BY- highway, and Highway 84 from Hensall through Zurich to the Bluewater highway. Father O,A. Martin, of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, St. Joseph, has been transferred to Big Point, Ontario. During his seven years at St. Joseph, Father Martin has built a new residence for the teaching Sisters and a new Parish Hall. Fred W. Hess, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hess, Zurich, has been successful in passing his fifth year in the Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. 15 Years Ago JULY, 1955 Mrs. Ed Datars has returned from St. Joseph's Hospital, Lond- on. much improved in health. Mrs. Earl Love entertained at her home on the Parr Line at a Trousseau Tea, on Wednesday, June 15, in honour of her elder daughter, Elva, whose marriage took place on June 18. The regular meeting of the Zurich 4 -I -I Calf Club was held on June 31, on the home of Herb Klapp with eleven of the mem- bers present. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Haberer spent Friday visiting with relatives in London. Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Thiel, and Mrs. George Thiel, spent the weekend at London with some of their relatives. Mrs. Fred Batstone and three daughters of Toronto, returned to tie city after spending a week at the home of her sister Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gascho. Rev. and Mrs. Cyril Gingerich have returned to their home in Toronto, after attending a con- ference in the local Mennonite Church, Zurich. Professor and Mrs. Kalbfleisch Of London, called on friends in town over the weekend. 10 Years Ago THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1970 JULY, 1960 A farewell party for Mr. and Mrs. Don Kyle, who are leaving this week end for their new home in Calgary, was held on Saturday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Steinbach. This Sunday afternoon, a fitting tribute to a wonderful school teacher will be made at the Com- munity Centre, Zurich, when the public are invited to attend a civic reunion in honour of Miss Olive O'Brien. At the meeting in the Township Hall, on Monday night, the Hay Township council decided to call for tenders for construction of two new concrete culverts on area roads. Mr. and Mrs. Don O'Brien, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Webb, Mr. and Mrs. Don Oke, and Mr. and Mrs. Doug O'Brien, spent the holiday weekend on a fishing trip to Shwanega. They report the fishing as being very good. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Neil, of Detroit, were holiday visitors at the home of Mrs. Pearl Mellick. Carole and Cathy Grenier, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Alph- onse Grenier, had their tonsils removed in Clinton Public Hospit- al, and are getting along very well.
