Zurich Citizens News, 1970-04-16, Page 16PAGE SIXTEEN Gerald Weido Top Scorer on Bantams In winning the all -Ontario Bantam E championship this season, .the Zurich Bantams rung up an enviable record of achievements. In the regular season they played a total of 17 games, winning 15, tying one and losing only one. In 14 playoff games, the team posted a record of 13 wins, no ties, and only one loss. As well, the team played nine exhibition and tournament games, and won seven of thein. They tied one and lost the other. The top man as far as scoring points on the team was concern- ed was captain Gerald Weido, who scored a total of '71 goals throughout the regular and play- off schedules. In addition, he picked up a total of 04 assists, to give him a grand total of 135 points. Next in line was Pat Bedard, who scored 02 goals and picked up 51 assists, for a grand total of 113 points. Bill Bedard was third in the scoring race with 33 goals and 40 assists, for 73 points. They express special thanks to those who madeptheir homecoming such a wonderful surprise the day they won the all -Ontario champ- ionship, and to all the parents, relatives and friends of the team who gave such fine co-operation all season. The players also thank the Zurich Bowling Lanes for the fine night of bowling they provided for them free of charge last Saturday evening. 0 Emmanuel U CW Entertain Guests Emmanuel United Chuxch, Zurich, held their United Church. Women's meeting on Thursday, April 9, at eight o'clock. Guests were present from Goshen United Church and Car- mel Presbyterian Church of Hen- sall. The meeting was opened with a piano selection by the pianist, Mrs. Merano Steckle. Mrs. El- wood Truemner, as leader, read a poem entitled "This We Ask." The scripture lesson was read by Mrs. William Hay, fol- lowed by a prayer by Mrs. Dor- othy Koehler. After the thank - offering was taken, Mrs. George Bullock read a poem on spring. The "Village Folk" entertain- ed with three numbers. The guest speaker, Mrs. Arth- ur Whilsmith, of Exeter, brought a message on "House cleaning our house and our minds." Mrs. William Siebert thanked Mrs. Whilsmith and presented her with a small, token of ap- preciation from the U.C.W. The meeting was closed with a hymn, followed by the bene- diction. During a short business period, Mrs. George Bullock, the pres- ident, displayed the quilts that were completed this winter. These included a crib quilt and a large one to be sold at the Bean Festival in Zurich, also four quilts for relief. Canadian pianist -organist and band leader Horace Lapp. Zurich Kings Win Rec League Hockey Title in Victory Over Bluewater Crew In a sudden death hockey game played to decide the champs of the Rec League, the Zurich Kings dumped the Bluewater team 11-6 to win the Zurich Rec League Title for 1969-70. The Zurich victory was head- ed by Gerald Shantz who acc- ounted for four of the victors goals. Phil Overholt aided to the cause blinking the red light twice. Single goals went to Dave Stark, Don Hesse, John Gascho, Paul Hesse and Larry Merner. Paul Charette and Dennis Beierling had two goals each for the Bluewater. Don Geiger and Clarence Rau added the extra markers. Bluewater held a 3-1 edge after one period of play but the second period saw Zurich outscore the Bluewater 5-1 to take a slight 6-4 lead.
