Zurich Student Heavy Pancake Eater
One of the highlights of the
winter carnival held at S.H.D.
H.S. this past weekend was a
24 hour long basketball mara-
thon, which began at 7 p.m.
on Friday evening and ended at
7 p.m. on Saturday. A team
led by Jerry Lobb of Centralia
won the contest 1, 047 to 770
over the team headed by Allan
McLean of Exeter.
The activities officially be-
gan when the teachers, for the
11th year, challenged the stu-
dents of grade 13 to a broom -
ball game, and for the first
time to 11 years the students
were defeated 4-2.
Saturday morning started off
with the snowmobile races, of
which Brad Pryde proved to be
the champion. In the afternoon
a special attraction was the
pancake eating contest, which
was won by Randy Decker of
Zurich. Randy ate 30 pancakes
Knights ofColumbus Plan Membership
Drive in Tribute to John F. Kennedy

Knight, of Father Stephen
Eckert Council of Seaforth and
district, of the I<nights of Col-
umbus, announces the particip-
ation of his council in a move
to commemorate the anniversary
of the initiation of the late
John F. Kennedy into the Knight;
of Columbus.
During the months of February
and March the Father Stephen
Eckert Council will join with
approximately 6, 000 other
Knights of Columbus units
throughout Canada, the United
States, Mexico, Phillipines,
Puerto Rico, Canal Zone, Guat-
emala and the Virgin Islands, to
encourage Catholic laymen to
become enrolled in the Knights
of Columbus as a tribute to the
memory of one of the Order's
most distinguished members.
Mr. Hagan has also announced
that Joseph L. O'Reilly will be
general chairman and the fol-
lowing are the acting parish
chairmen in the Father Stephen
Eckert Council area, and the
membership project commences
immediately; for Zurich, Lloyd
Denomme and Leo Meidinger;
St. Marys at St. Joseph, Phillip
Durand and Leo Charles Duch-
arme; Mt. Carmel and Exeter,
William McCann and John Mah-
oney.
Huron -Perth Separate School. Board
Agrees To Pay Kindergarten Tuition
The Huron -Perth separate
school board Monday night
approved payment of tuition
fees for about 18 Roman Catholic
children attending kindergarten
classes at public schools.
Payment is restricted to child-
ren who were registered in kind-
ergarten last September. Tuit-
ions, payable to the Huron and
Perth public school boards,
amount to $200 annually per
child.
The separate school board
had intended to have kinder-
garten classes available, for all
pupils last fall, but this was
changed to September 1970.
The matter was brought be-
fore the board by trustee John
McCann, of RR 3, Ailsa Craig,
who requested payment of tuit-
ions for children in his area
attending kindergarten classes
in nearby public schools.
Three schools are involved:
Our Lady of Mount Carmel at
Dashwood, Holy Name Separate
School, at St. Marys and St.
Boniface Separate School at
Zurich.
The system of payment ap-
proved also applied last year
and prior to formation of the
dual county separate school.
in the one-half hour time limit.
Other activities -of the day
included snowshoe races, snow
sculpturing, tug of war, a movie
and a 'girls powderpuff football
game, all of which were open-
ed by the King and Queen which
had been picked Friday night at
the dance.
The weekend ended with free
skating all day Sunday and a
film held at the school.
The student council raised
about $600., with donations of
$200. to the Canadian National
Institute for the Blind, $200.
to the Canadian Cancer Society,
and $200. towards the support
of three foster children.

Grand Bend Names
New Clerk For
Vacant Position
The regular February meeting
of Grand Bend council was
cancelled last Monday evening
when only two of the five mem-
bers put in an appearance.
Reeve Orval Wassmann and
Councillor Ivan Luther waited
along with Chamber of Com-
merce secretary Jack Mennell
for close to an hour before de-
ciding to disband.
Mennell was in attendance
to take minutes of the meeting
in the absence of a regular
clerk- treasurer. Lorne Clemas
resigned as clerk a week ago
after taking over from Murray
A. DesJardins on January 1.
Wassmann announced Monday
evening that Miss Penny Martel
of Thedford has been hired as
the new clerk -treasurer and
tax collector and will assume
her duties, February 16.
Miss Martel has five and one-
half years of experience in the
municipal field and is presently
the assistant to James Dalton,
clerk of Bosanquet Township.
Grand Bend council will hold
their next meeting, Monday,
February16, at 7:30 p.m.
Mondy's meetingwas called
off because councillor Ian Coles
was absent due to illness, Doug-
las Martin is vacationing in
Florida and Al Parker was unable
to attend because of a Work
emergency.
Ontario Provincial Police investigate
Rash of Area Traffic Accidents
During the week of February
1 to 7th, the Exeter detachment
of the Ontario Provincial Police
investigated a total of seven
accidents, in which three per-
sons were injured. Nine charges
were laid under the highway
Traffic Act, and three under
the Liquor Control Act, There
were also 20 warnings handed
out under the Highway traffic
Act.
During the same week, the
detacluuent investigated two
thefts, and six other criminal
offences.
The accidents investigated
were as follows:
On Sunday, February 1, at
12.30 a.m. a car operated by
Andrew Ilyskantp of RR,1,
Wyoming, collided with a ce-
ment cistern on the east side
of New Brunswick Avenue, Hur-
on Park. Damage to the car
was estimated at $300. Prov-
incial Constable D, A. Mason
investigated.
On Sunday, February 1, at
4, 40 p.m, cars operated by
Roy F. Rocld of R. R,1, Granton
and Leonard I1, Bates of R.R.
2, North Dorchester, collided
on No. 23 highway south of•
Granton, Mrs. Elsie Rodd suf-
fered shock and bruises and Mrs.
Pauline -Bates suffered a bump.

On Sunday, February 1, at
6, 00 p.m. a car operated by
Douglas E. CowardofR,R,1,
Woodham, collided with a car
operated by Fred H. MacDonald
of Clinton on No. 4 Highway
at the junction of No. 6 county
road. Damage was estimated at
$1, 100. Provincial Constable
D, A, Lamont investigated.
On Thursday, February 5, at
4,15 p.m. cars operated by
Jean Irwin of R,R,3, Lucknow,
and William G. Rumball, of
Grand Bend, collided on No.
4 highway at No. 4 County Road.
Damage was estimated at $150.
Provincial Constable E,C, Wil-
cox investigated.
On Thursday, February 5, at
1,15 p, m. a car operated by
Irwin R, Eagleson of R, R. 8
Parkhill, collided with a parked
car owned by Thomas Fleming
on No 5 County Road during a
snow storm. Damage was est-
imated at $1, 300. Provincial
Constable D, A, Mason invest-
igated.
On Saturday, February 7, at
2, 00 a, m, a car operated by
Paul G. Flaxbard of Zurich was
travelling west on 84 Highway,
went off the south side striking

Popular Hensall Couple Wed 50 Years
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Horton,
highly esteemed residents of
Hensall, have celebrated their
Golden Wedding Anniversary.
They were married on the 7th
of February, 1920, at St. Judes
Anglican Church at Kings Cross,
London, England. It was while
serving with the Canadian Corps
Cyclists that Mr, Horton met
his wife, the former Annie Page.
After their wedding they left
for Canada on March 19, 1920,
sailing aboard the S. S . Saxonia
and after arriving in Hensall
have lived in and around there
ever since.
They celebrated with a dinner
on the evening of February 6,
1970, and a reception afterwards,
On February 7th, they held"Open
House."
Telegrams were received from
the Prime Minister of Canada,
and also from Mr. Stanfield. A
plaque was received from the
Prime Minister and members of
the Province of Ontario, also
letters from Hon. and Mrs. C.S.
IvlacNaughton, and Mr. and Mrs.
R, E, McKinley.
At the morning service of
Hensall United Church, Rev.
Harold V. Currie announced the
wedding anniversary of Mr. and
Mrs. Horton. He stated that over
a period of 40 years they have
rendered faithful service to this
church and community, and
that their devotion and loyalty
to the choir of the church is
recognized by all of the congre-
gation.
