Dominions Still in Second Place
The Zurich Dominions, during
the last two weeks, have won
two games, tied one and lost
one in the western grouping of
the OHA Junior D league. They
tied Belmont 3-3 in Belmont,
defeated Mitchell 6-3 in Zurich
and 6-1 in Mitchell and then
this past Sunday they lost to Bel-
mont 6-2 in the local arena.
The local squad are still in sec-
ond place in the group standing,
six points behind Exeter and
only one point ahead of Belmont,
who have played two games
more than the Dominions. Last
night, Wednesday, the local
squad played in Lambeth, and
on Sunday afternoon they host
the Lucan Irish in the local
arena.
ZURICH 3 - BELMONT 3
The Dominions came from be-
hind in their 3-3 tie with Bel-
mont and scored on a power play
goal with less than three min-
utes to go in the game.
Shane McKinnon gave the
Dominions a 1-0 lead midway
through the first period, and
this lead held up until the 7.33
mark in the second stanza,
when Murray Dale knotted the
score at 1-1 for Belnont. Two
minutes later Murray Shall].
gave Belmont a 2-1 lead, and
hen with less than two minutes
remaining in the period Stu
Mustard scored a picture goal
on a breakaway to tie the score
at 2-2.
At the 2.54 mark in the third
period, Gord Weaver beat Gary
Geoffrey in the Zurich net to
make the score 3-2, and the
Belmont crew unleashed a power-
ful offensive against the Domin-
ions. Only the outstanding play
of Geoffrey kept the Belmont
crew off the score -sheet for the
balance of the game. With
time running out the Dominions
began to bear down and with
Bill Taylor playing right wing
with Ron Corriveau and Stu
Mustard the trio clicked to score
the equalizer at 17.20. Corriv-
eau grabbed the puck from a
centre -ice face-off, passed to
Taylor who carried it deep into
the Belmont zone and then flip-
ped it over to Mustard who made
no mistake in picking the top
right-hand corner of the net.
A total of 16 penalties were
handed out in the game with 12
of them going to Belmont and
only four to Zurich.
ZURICH 6 - MITCHELL 3
Before a home -town crowd in
the Zurich Arena on December
28, the Dominions rallied from
behind an early 2-0 lead for
Mitchell, and easily won the
game 6-3.
By the 13 -minute mark in the
first period, Glen Nicholson and
Al Harrow had scored for Mitch-
ell, to give them an early 2-0
lead. With less than three min-
utes to play in the period, Stu
Mustard scored from Bruce Scho-
enhals and Ron Corriveau to give
the locals a new start.
Neither team managed to score
in the second session, although
they come up with a period of
good fast hockey.
The third period was only one
minute old when Mustard bang-
ed in his second goal of the game
to tie the score at 2-2, and Hien
in the next 15 minutes John Load-
er scored three goals and Bill
Taylor one to give the Dominions
a commanding 6-2 lead. With
less than two minutes left in the
game Mitchell was awarded a
penalty shot and Nicholson flip-
ped the puck past Geoffrey high
in the right-hand corner of the
net.
Seven penalties were called
against Zurich in the game,
with eight going to Mitchell.
ZURICH 6 - MITCHELL 1
The Dominions came up with
their best effort of the season
last Tuesday night in Mitchell,
when they skated to an easy 6-1
victory over the Hawks. There
was little doubt of the outcome
of the game right from the open-
ing face-off, as the local crew
skated and checked as if it were
a matter of life and death.
Ron Corriveau was the big
scoring gun in rhe game for
Zurich as he notched three goals,
Stu Mustard, Fred Armstrong
and Randy Decker each scored
once to help the local's cause.
Mustard opened the scoring at
the 4.07 mark of the first period,
and then in the second Corriveau,
Armstrong and Decker scored in
that order. Corriveau scored
both Zurich goals in the third
period.
Garry Geoffrey looked to be
well on his way to his second
shut -out of the season until
near the end of the third period,
when a fluke shot by Greg Strath -
dee got by him.
Zurich out -shot the Mitchell
squad 63-21 throughout the game,
and in the last two periods allow-
ed only seven shots on goal, two
of them in the third and five in
the second.
The entire team played out-
standing hockey in registering
their fourth victory of the season
over Mitchell, and both the
forwards and defencemen skated
hard and back -checked well.
A total of 30 penalties were
called in the game, with 20 of
them going to a perturbed Mit-
chell crew and only 10 to Zur-
ich. Mitchell picked up two

The Dominions lost only their
second game in 12 starts on Sun-

then in the third the roof fell in

a 1-0 lead in the first period,
and early in the second John
Willsie made it 2-0 before the
Dominions found the range.
Two goals by Ron Corriveau and
Bill Stirling, two minutes apart
in the dying minutes of the per-
iod, gave the locals a new lease
on life, and local fans were hope
ful their herds could rebound in
the third.
Belmont lost little time in hit-
ting the scoresheet in the third
session, and pumped in four
unanswered goals to give them
a convincing 6-2 victory. It
was the first time this season
that Belmont managed to defeat
the locals.
A total of 23 penalties were
called, with 12 of them going to
the Dominions and 11 to Belmont.
