Barber Boys Continue to Threaten
Leaders In Zurich Rec League Play
In the past two weeks, the
Barber Boys have been making a
strong bid for second place in
the Zurich Rec League, tallying
two wins in as many starts, thus
extending their winning streak
to four straight games. They
now have seven victories, the
sante number as Charlies Auto
Sales, but Charlies still bold
second position by virtue of a
game in hand with the Bluewater
Boys.
On July 30, Merner's crew kande
ed first place Gingerichs their
second loss of the season by
edging them out, 18-17. Both
teams committed six errors and
both had twenty-three hits in
the high -scoring game.
The game started out very
close with both squads counting
three runs in the first frame. How
ever, Gingerich pulled ahead of
the game by the end of the third,
by pushing seven runs across the
plate to lead 10-4. When the
Barbers came to the plate in the
bottom of the seventh, they were
trailing by a score of 17-13.
Five hits and two Gingerich errors
led to a five -run rally by the
Barber Boys which send them to
their 18-17 victory.
Pitcher Phil Overholt, who earn-
ed the victory, also was the top
batter with four singles and a
double. Larry Bedard added four
hits; Bob Johnston, Jim Bedard
and Shane McKinnon had three
hits apiece. Aubrey Bedard and
Eric Smale had two each, includ-
ing a homer by Smale; and Bob
Merner hit safely once.
For the losers, the league's
leading batter, Gary Gingerich,
socked out three singles and a
two -run bagger, while James
Ramer, Lloyd Lostell, Tony
Bedard, John Gascho, and losing
pitcher Richard Shantz contribute'
three hits apiece. Glen Gascho
had two singles and Cliff Ging-
erich and Don Parsons had one
each.
Albert Hoffman and George
Sweeney were umpires for the
game.
Last Wednesday night, the
Barber Boys win was a much eas-
ier one as they dropped the Blue-
Rec Playoffs
To Begin Soon
The Rec Leasue schedule was
finished last night, except for
one postponed game between
Charlies Auto Sales and the
Bluewater Boys.
If Charlies lost to the Barbers
last night, that game will definit-
ely be played since second place
is at stake.
The playoffs will get under way
as soon as possible, with the first
and third-place finishers squaring
off, and the second- and- fourth -
place teams meeting each other.
