Zurich Citizens News, 1969-08-14, Page 12PAGE TWELVE ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 1969 Barber Boys Continue to Threaten Leaders In Zurich Rec League Play In the past two weeks, the Barber Boys have been making a strong bid for second place in the Zurich Rec League, tallying two wins in as many starts, thus extending their winning streak to four straight games. They now have seven victories, the sante number as Charlies Auto Sales, but Charlies still bold second position by virtue of a game in hand with the Bluewater Boys. On July 30, Merner's crew kande ed first place Gingerichs their second loss of the season by edging them out, 18-17. Both teams committed six errors and both had twenty-three hits in the high -scoring game. The game started out very close with both squads counting three runs in the first frame. How ever, Gingerich pulled ahead of the game by the end of the third, by pushing seven runs across the plate to lead 10-4. When the Barbers came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, they were trailing by a score of 17-13. Five hits and two Gingerich errors led to a five -run rally by the Barber Boys which send them to their 18-17 victory. Pitcher Phil Overholt, who earn- ed the victory, also was the top batter with four singles and a double. Larry Bedard added four hits; Bob Johnston, Jim Bedard and Shane McKinnon had three hits apiece. Aubrey Bedard and Eric Smale had two each, includ- ing a homer by Smale; and Bob Merner hit safely once. For the losers, the league's leading batter, Gary Gingerich, socked out three singles and a two -run bagger, while James Ramer, Lloyd Lostell, Tony Bedard, John Gascho, and losing pitcher Richard Shantz contribute' three hits apiece. Glen Gascho had two singles and Cliff Ging- erich and Don Parsons had one each. Albert Hoffman and George Sweeney were umpires for the game. Last Wednesday night, the Barber Boys win was a much eas- ier one as they dropped the Blue- Rec Playoffs To Begin Soon The Rec Leasue schedule was finished last night, except for one postponed game between Charlies Auto Sales and the Bluewater Boys. If Charlies lost to the Barbers last night, that game will definit- ely be played since second place is at stake. The playoffs will get under way as soon as possible, with the first and third-place finishers squaring off, and the second- and- fourth - place teams meeting each other. Jim Bedard swung the heavy bat for the Barber Boys, as he knock- ed out two singles and two double while Aubrey Bedard backed hint up with three hits, Angus McIntosh, Larry Bedard, Shane McKinnon, and Ray Weld() each added two, while Dave McNair and Phil Overholt each had singles. For the Bluewater, Larry Den- omme and Bernie Denow me had two hits apiece, and Paul Charrette, Dave Durand, Gerard Ducharnte and Tony Denonunte had one hit each. 0 Gingerichs Edge Charlies to Post Twelfth Victory In one of the lowest scoring games seen in Rec League soft- ball this year, Gingerich's Sales and Service won their twelfth in fourteen starts and insured their possession of first place. Charlie: cams out on the short end of the 7 - :., score, and now are in danger of losing second place to the Barber Boys. Both teams were blanked in the first inning, but Pete Regier's double drove in a run in the second to give Charlies a 1 - 0 lead. However, Gingerich's bounced back with three rens in the third and the fifth to go aheac 6 - 1. Charlies threatened to tie it up in the sixth, but only man- aged four runs to trail 6 - 5. Gingerich's pitcher then kept Charlies off the score sheet in the last three innings, allowing only •one bit and walking. only one. The winners added a final run in the eighth ro wrap up the victory, Gary Gingerich and Don Parsons each had two hits for the winners, while James Ranter, Cliff Ginger- ich, Lloyd Lostell, Tony Bedard, Jahn Gascho, and Cord Smith had singles. Pete Regier and Randy Decker led the losers with two hits, as Rick Schilbe, Dave Stark, Kevin McADAM'S TV ZURICH Dashwood Wins First Game of Playoff Series The Dashwood Tigers won the first game of the Huron -Perth Baseball League Intermediate D finals on Tuesday night, when they rurg up a convincing 13-5 victory over the Zurich Kings. Second and third games in the series will also be played in Dashwood under the new lights, on Thursday and Friday nights of this week. Dashwood scored three runs in the first, added another in the fourth, cattle up with five big markers in the sixth and finished off with two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Zurich scored once in the second and seventh innings and came up with their best effort in the six when Don and Doug O'Brien banged out back-to-back home runs to deep centre field. Bill Schade was the big man with the willow for Dashwood slapping out five hits in six times at bar. Ile had a home Iun, two doubles two singles. Bob Hoffman and Pete Ravelle both hit safely twice, with both Hoffman's blasts being doubles. For Zurich Ron Corriveau led the hitting barrage with a double and a single, while Kevin Mc- Kinnon, Don O'Brien, Doug O'Brien, Earl Wagner, Dick Bedard, George Ilaggitt and Rick Schilbe each hit safely once. Dave Ratz went the distance on the mound for Dashwood liutiting the Kings to nine hits. He struck out seven. Dick Bed- ard worked ail nine innings for Zurich, giving up 12 hits. Ile struck out five batters. 0 DASHWOOD NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Rader and Brian visited with Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Rader at Calgary. They attended the installation service at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Calgary, of Rev. Rader. Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Rader and Sharon and Mr. and Sirs. Elgin Rader and Brian visited with Mr. McKinnon, and Paul Flaxbard added one each. One of Decker' hits for Charlies was a home run.
