ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS Stephen Drops Mill Rate But Overall Increase Hikes Taxes Higher Stephen township council low- ered its mill rate this year, but ratepayers will still pay more taxes. General increases in education and Huron county denians have resulted in a general residential and farm increase of 2.39 mills and a commercial increase of 3.73. Thar computes approximately to $l1.95 residental and $18.65 commercial ratepayers will have to cough up this year on an assessment of $5, 000. For separate school supporters the picture is brighter. Faced with an imbalance in general supporters favour last year, in 1969 the still rates have been equalized, meaning separate residental taxpayers face only a .69 increase while separate commercial increase is but 1.22 stills. Township clerk -treasurer Wil- bert Wein said following the meeting Stephen is the first township in Ontario able to lower its mill rate. Although the overall picture is up over 2 stills, this results from a 2 mill hike by the county, 2.59 mills for public schools, 2. 8 stills for secondary schools and .69.in separate school taxes. In other words, had the township rate remained the same as in 1968, taxpayers would have faced over a 7 trill increase. As it worked out Mr. Wein explained township council was able to reduce its portion of the mill rate by 5 mills, keeping the general increase down to an acceptable -level. The same applies to commer- cial trill rate. The county increased 2 mills, secondary school 2. 87, public school 3.11 and separate school 1.22 . However the township rate reduct ion of 4.25 mills resulted again CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY All the children and grandchil- dren of Mrs. Pauline Jefrrey visi- ted their mother on Sunday, on the occasion of her 80th birthday, A delicious supper was served at 5 p.rn. to climax a perfect day for the lady. in an increase of only 3.73. The townships reduction hinges on a deficit in 1967, due to an operating deficit council increase the 1968 rate by nearly 7 mills. however, operating costs have levelled.off and council, having made up the deficit last year, can reduce the still rate. Three police villages in the township have 'not faired. so well. Dashwood faces a general rate increase of three mills bringing the rate up to 15. however, township administration costs levied have jumped for resident - al to 9 from 7 and commercial 13.5 from 10.75. Total rates for both public and separate school supporters in Dashwood for are 84.65 resid- ental and 95.57 commercial. Crediton faces similar increases Although general purpose assess- ment remain at 15 twills plus a special fire protection levy of five trills, administration levies are up to 9 trills residental, 18.5 commercial for total still rates of 89.65 residental and 103.87 commercial.
