Zurich Citizens News, 1969-07-31, Page 7THURSDAY, JULY 31, 1969 Proper Care of Cut Flowers Most gardeners enjoy taking blossoms indoors for arrangement; There are a few things to remember when cutting flowers, horticulturists with the Ontario Department of Agriculture and • Food say. Cut garden flowers in the cool of the evening or in the early morning. Always use a sharp knife or cutting shears. Sterns should be cut cleanly on a slant. Place freshly cut stems in water immediately. Try to prevent prolonged exposure of cut flowers to sun, wind and heat. Each of these conditions can reduce keeping quality. All plant material to be used in arrangements must be condit- ioned first. To do this, remove the lower leaves and place the stems in a deep container of cold water for at least four hours, in a cool, dark , draft - free room. Many flowers require special attention to prepare them for arranging. Flowers with woody stems should have the cut ends crushed to permit easier uptake of water. Plants such as Oriental poppies, which exude a milky sticky sap when cut, should have the ends charred. This is easily done by holding the cut tip to a flame. Nodding blossoms may require a wire to hold them up. A find mist sprayed over the flowers will help them to retain their fresh appearance. Some flowers give best results when picked at a particular stage of blossoming, Roses and peonies will last longer if cut when the buds are on the verge of unfolding outer petals. Gladioli should be cut when the lowest bud opens fully. Poppies can be taken the night before they open. Dahlias in full bloom are suitable for arranging. Most other flowers should be cut just before reaching full bloom. zuricii3 Memionito Ephraim Gingerich, Pastor SUNDAY, AUGUST 3 — 9:45 a.m.—Worship Service 10:45 a.m.—Sunday School SUNDAY, AUGUST 10 — 9:45 a.m.—Worship Service 10:45 a.m.--Sunday School "And God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also -- and let them be for signs, and for days and years: Genesis 1:16. saw ase laimmumammanammimmimaseam St. Peter's Lutheran Church Rev.
