Playoff time is almost here for
the Iluron-Perth Baseball league.
Some of the positions are still
in doubt so all the rained out
games are being played to see
what position has been won by
each team. The games against
Walkerton are counted as exhib-
ition contests and are not includ-
ed in the standings, which were
were unable to get. Only four
teams are eliggable for playoffs.
Mitchell and Thorndale were
running one-two in the standings,
Dashwood ended the season by
winning six straight games and
ended with 14 points. Zurich,
Clinton and St. Marys all had
eight points the night of the
meeting and the results of the
remaining games would show the
winners of the last playoff spot.
The Zurich Minor Athletic
Association softball season is in
its second week and some healthy
scores have been registered.
Monday night the Cards scored
21 runs in one inning and thumpec
the Dodgers 44-24. Four players
scored three runs in one inning
in the game. This is something
that is not accomplished very
often.
The people who are marking
the score sheets for these games
have nor indicated inning
changes and have just stroked
out the player's name when he
left the line-up, so, we are
unable to know who the players
were that scored the triple runs
in one inning. We ask that the
scorer nark the inning when a
player comes into the ball
game and not to scribble out
the preceeding player's name
so we hope this will enable us
to give a better account of
the games to the readers.
When we lived in Zurich a
few years ago we could not
understand why the Kings did
not hold many practices, but
we weren't married then and had
lots of time on our hands and the
ball diamond, whether it be a
game or a practice, was a good
Gingerich Hitters
To Strong For
Charlies Nine
Second -place Charlies Auto
Sales made a strwng bid to defeat
league -leading Gingerich,
scoring nine runs in the first four
innings while giving up only
seven. However. Charlies seem-
ed to tall apart atter the fourth
as Gingerich's blanked them in
the remaining five inngs, allow-
ing only 18 batters to Cie plate.
Gingerichs score one in the fifth
and one in the sixth to tie the
game, and then gained the 15- 9
victory with a five -run outburst
in the seventh and added on
insurance run in the eighth.
Cliff Gingerich and Richard
Shantz shared the pitching duties
for Gingerichs, with Shantz
earning the victory. Jerry Rader
and Kevin Mc Kinnon served on
the mound for the losers.
Four Gingerich batters, Lloyd
Lostell, Gary Gingerich, Tony
Bedard and John Gascho knocked
out three hits each. Glenn
Gascho and Cliff Gingerich hit
two each, including a home run
by Gingerich, while Richard
Shantz and Don Parsons each had
singles.
Jerry Rader led Charlies' effort
with two singles and a double,
with Dave Stark, Richard Turk-
heim and Pete Regier and Ron
Desjardine adding two each.
Richard Schilbe and Ray Fink-
beiner each hit safely once.
George Sweeney, George
Haggitt and Albert Hoffman were
on hand to officiate the game,
place to oe.
Today, we can understand why
the rerun does not have many
practices. The guys who are
!married have enough to do arou-
nd the house without having to
be at the ball diamond every
night. We couldn't get this
through our thick head before
but now that we have ,just got
a little older and wisened up a
wee bit, we can understand
how much time a man has for
ball. Playing two nights a week
is almost too much for them
without having to practice.
We apologize, players, and
their wives, for our previous
criticism. Now we are on the
married side of the fence, we see
what the problem is.
Barbers Use Nine Run Outburst
To Record Victory Over Bluewater
l'he heavy' hitting of Aubrey
Bedard and Eric Sutale led the
Barber Boys to 0 19-12 win over
the 13iuewcttcr nine for their
fourth victor) of the season in
Zurich Ree League Softball
play, Bedard contributed three
singles, a double, and a home
run, 'v hi le Smale added two
singles, a two -bagger, and a
homer.
The Barbers showed great
strength in the first three
innings, as they scored twelve
runs: two in the first, nine in
rhe second, and one in the third:
while keeping their opponents
off the score sheet. however,
the Blucwater squad blanked rhes
in the fourth and scored single
runs in the fourth, fifth and
sixth innings. Merner's bays
bounces back in the fifth and
sixth, counting seven more runs,
their last of Clic game. The
last three innings were strong
ones for the Blue water boys who
threatened to tie the game,
blanking the Barbers and crossing
the plate nine times. Unfortun-
ately for the Lakers, their
effort was too late for a success-
ful comeback, and the Barbers
emerged victors.
Phil Overholt pitched the liar-
-bers to victory, giving up four-
teen hits, walking eight, and
strking out seven, Dave Durand
took the loss.
The other Barber Boy sluggers
besides Bedard and Sulale, were
Phil Overholt, Shane McKinnon.,
and Larry Bedard with two each,
and Bob Johnston, Paul Corriveau
.Jilts Bedard, Gary Geoffrey and
Dave McNair with one each.
Paul Charrette and Steve
Denonnne each bad three hits for
the Bluewater while Larry
Denomtme, Bernie Denontule,
Tem Rau, and ]lave Durand
contributed two hits apiece.
Doug O'Brien
Spoils No-hitter
Joe Berberick and Paul O'Breich
combined to hold the Zurich
Kings to one lone hit as Walker-
ton blanked Zurich 6-0 in Huron -
Perth Baseball league play last
week. Don O'Brien hurled for
the losers and yielded six hits in
the eight inning games.
Walkerton's catcher, Mortimer,
scored twice for the winners
while single runs were added by
Allan Hunter, Berberick, Condy
and Bester. Mortimer's hit was
a home run and accounted for
three of the Walkerton runs in
the first inning. Other hits by
the Bruce County team were by
Ilenry, Brinley, Condy, Bester
and Thompson.
A fifth inning double by Doug
O'Brien was the only hit the
Kings managed in the game. It
came after Berberick had set
down the first twelve Zurich
batters. O'Brien got on base
again when he was hit with the
ball and Earl Wagner walked.
