FOOD AND CONSEQUENCES
(by Mrs.. Samuel lluber)
The life expectancy, as it is
called, for the average Americar
or Canadian, has increased
tremendously in the lass couple
of centuries. That's nothing
new. \'ie've been hearing about
it for a long time. What we
haven't been hearing is that the
average American (or, again,
Canaciian)nlale with forty or
so years behind lulu; has one of
the poorer life expectancies of
any country in the world,
Confusing? Contradictory?
nog -wash? Not really!
Not when you consider that in
111311)' countries, 111311)' of the
leech (and W0111Cn, for that
platter) never sec forty.
They've already died from
any number of things, including"
1. Foods: conspicious chiefly
because of their absence.
Fueds: personal or inter -mat-
rimonial - and a lot in between.
3. Fevers: meaning such things
as malaria, and all its relatives.
4. Fate: including all the
accidental, and sometimes
not so accidental occurances
that arise most anywhere --
like being swallowed (by a
python, maybe or having your
dug -out capsize,. or freezing to
death, or drowning in an over-
ambitious monsoon or.... well
maybe even being deported to
Siberia.
Well, a lot of things can
happen, and they. do. But
we've managed to pretty well
write "finis" to infant moItality,
death in childbirth, T, B. ,
any variety of plagues, and
probably several others of the
leading causes of death in our
own country a century ago, and
still hiR11 on the list in many
areas of the world. So
we've cut right down to the
ground --well, almost anyway --
on death to the under -forties.
Meanwhile, we've had a
terrific upsurge in:
1. heart -troubles - one of every
two victims of serious first

to prevent a seconds he's already
dead.
2. diabetes - who do you know
over sixty who does not have?
and before you say "me", you'd
better have your doctor do sollle
tests!
.3, arthritis - certainly uncom-
fortable, and to those not given
to compassion, unsightly.
4, cirrhosis of the liver - seldom
called by its right name, but non
the -less a killer.
5, anemia - that washed-out,
dragged -out, all -done -in feeling
like when your get-up-and-go
and got -up -and -went -- and
often all the iron in northern
Ontario won't restore your
ambition.
Cancer we won't mention --
not even in a whisper.
These things are with us and
so are a lot of others, You can
close your eyes if you want, but
they won't go away. You may
find some small comfort in the
fact that the world is over-
populated anyway. But it won't
ease your arthritis one bit, or --
well, a lot of other things,
either.
