SURE SIGN OF SPRING — When area mo-
torcycle enthusiasts are seen out at their fav-
orite sport, it must be •a sure sign of spring,
and this past week -end saw most of the youths
back on their two -wheelers. , Seen here as they
enjoy a spin an their bikes are Ron Desch, Doug
Coxon and Michael Walker. The boys said it
was still 3 bit cool but they were dressed ap-
propriately.

As the warm spring brezzes blow
in the open stable door on a sunny
day, the cows begin to get rest-
less for the outdoors and the fresh
grass which they can smell grow-
ing. If you are like most of us,
you're probably getting itchy to
get them outside' too. with one
eye on the feed left in the barn
and the other on how much time
you spend doing the'chores.
Unfortunately, too many dairy-
men tend to think they can forget
about feeding the cows when they
get on fresh grass. That kind of
treatment will do for yearlings,
but not for heavy milking cows.
All cows should continue, to get

Are
some dry feed such as hay when
they go on spring pasture, and
high producers Should get plenty
of grain as well. Here's why.
The two fundamental reasons
are that spring grass is low in
fibre and low in energy. It is
high protein all right, and that will
give production a spurt, but even
an average producer won't keep
up her body weight on a diet as
high in protein and low in energy
as is fresh grass. Hay increases
the energy intake and balances
the ration. You could use part
corn silage with the hay if you
wish. The easiest way to handle
either is in a self feeder in the
yard, but you can also feed:in the.
stall.
We all know that the king -pin
of the cow's digestion system is her
rumen. Here the bacteria digest
much of the feed eaten, leaving
it. in a form that the rest of the
cow's digestive system can handle.
Some dry hay is very important
along with lush May and lune grass
to maintain rumen activity. There
is the additional fact that a cow's
appetite is controlled by the
weight of feed in her rumen.
Spring grass is very high in water
and low hi dry matter and she may
stop eating too soon. Some dry hay
will help balance the intake.
Another benefit from maintaining
the roughage content of the feed,
is the butterfat test. Research
has proven that on the average,
test will drop with low -fibre
rations. Lush grass is too low in
fibre content to keep the test up as
high as it should be.
Up to this point, we haven't
said anything about feeding grain
on pasture. High levels of grain
feediag are a must if we want to
maintain high levels of milk
pruduction, regardless of the time
of year. In the spring, feed the
heavy milkers enough grain to
provide energy they need to keep
their milk production up to par.
I haven't said anything about
feet, legs and hoof trimming,
and space for this week is almost
all gone. Cows that have been
in free stalls all winter will be in
pretty good shape. Cows that have
been in tie stalls, and not let out
for exercise each ,day should get a
chance to exercise unused leg
muscles every gay for a while
before going on pasture. Trim the
hooves also to avoid cracked and
broken claws and sore feet.
