The fish weighed nearly 30 pounds and it took a strong pull to land him. Among those who have re- ported for military duty at Lon- don from Zurich during the past weeks are L. W. Hoffman, R. J. Kalbfleisch, Wellington John- ston and Orland Johnston. Chris and Moses Erb, of the Bronson Line. recently pur- chased the registered Short- honr bull "Lord Rosalie" from J. J. Merner. This is a choice animal and is one of the best raised by Mr. Merner. Mr. D. Gascho. courier of route number two, out of Zur- ich, is now delivering the mail in a new Ford car. 40 Years Ago April, 1928 There will be no services in the Lutheran church on Good Friday but on Sunday, April 8, Rev. Schilke will preach in the German language in the morn- ing and student Datars will have charge of evening service, which will be in English. H. Tay- lor, while at school last Friday had the misfortune to fall fracturing her shoulder. The second Red Cross com- munity quilting was held in the Lutheran church basement in Dashwood when over 90 ladies attended and quilted 24 quilt. Workmen are still busy at the new apartment duplex being constructed for Walter Eckel in the Merner block. When completed it will make very at- tractive living quarters for two families. . 15 Years Ago APRIL, 1953 Mrs. Jack Fasken (nee Mary Merner) of Elora and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Merner, of Zurich, received a cablegram stating that she'd won $56,000 in the Irish Sweepstakes. The executive of the Com- munity Centre, the Chamber of Commerce and the Zurich Lions Club met at the community hall to look into the matter of installing an artificial freezer in the arena. Asa result a committee was appointed to look further into the matter and re- port. With the mild winter just passing and practically no ice, the place is of little use and a big expense to keep up instead .of a paying proposition. The cost would be somewhere, around $30,000 of which it is hoped the government would give a substantial grant. Mrs. David Meyers is the new president of the Zurich library. Hensall stores will be open every Saturday evening until 11 p.m. starting April 4. 10 Years Ago APRIL, 1958 Elston Cardiff wins with a majority of 6,647 votes over his opponent William G. Cochrane, Exeter. Mrs. Theresa Hartman was named president of the Catholic Women's League. Robert Thiel, Doris Pepper, Janet Reder, Caron Gattinger, Sharon Lawrence, Sharon Reder, Earl Wagner, Allan Broken - shire, Arthur Winter, Dale Gat- tinger, Henry Gackstetter, Peter Martin, Russell Klopp and Allan Prang were confirmed as mem- bers of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Zurich. Clerk Brokenshire suggested that council leave a final de- cision on the matter until the mill rate is set later this year. Another proposal by Wilder was to provide the machinery to allow ratepayers to pay a large percentage of their taxes mid -way through the year. Al- though council felt that the book work entailed would be- come an unnecessary burden, it was agreed that further talks on the subject could be bene- ficial. Dogs A by-law covering stray dogs was given first and second read- ing and will be passed at next Monday evening's meeting of council. Council recognizes that it is possible that one dog could cost council about $11.50 by the time it is housed and fed for three days at the pound with South Huron Veterinary Clinic, given a humane end if no owner is found and finally destroyed.
