While sucker fshing at Grand
Bend on Monday night, Mr. C.
Fritz landed a German carp.
The fish weighed nearly 30
pounds and it took a strong
pull to land him.
Among those who have re-
ported for military duty at Lon-
don from Zurich during the past
weeks are L. W. Hoffman, R. J.
Kalbfleisch, Wellington John-
ston and Orland Johnston.
Chris and Moses Erb, of the
Bronson Line. recently pur-

The recent warm weather and
rains have put the roads in al-
most an impassable condition.
It is a very common thing, for
no matter what make of car
you have, you are obliged to
get a team of horses and be
pulled out.
Ernest Bates left last week
for Stratford where he has se-
cured a good position as sales-
man for an auto firm. He will
be greatly missed in Hensall
and as head of our very effi-
cient fire department will be
hard to replace. He took the
lead in all kinds of sports and
has been chief of the fire de-
parment and has built up a
splendid organization.

of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Merner,
of Zurich, received a cablegram
stating that she'd won $56,000
in the Irish Sweepstakes.
The executive of the Com-
munity Centre, the Chamber of
Commerce and the Zurich Lions
Club met at the community
hall to look into the matter of
installing an artificial freezer
in the arena. Asa result a
committee was appointed to look
further into the matter and re-
port. With the mild winter
just passing and practically no
ice, the place is of little use
and a big expense to keep up
instead .of a paying proposition.
The cost would be somewhere,
around $30,000 of which it
is hoped the government would
give a substantial grant.

SPRING FEVER — The extremely pleasant
weather of the past week has brought many resi-
dents out of doors to start their spring clean-up.
Rotten leaves are the main victim of many rakes
handled by housewives in the area, and this pile
gathered up by Mrs. H. W. Brokenshire, in 'Zurich,
is no exception. During the warm spell, the smell
of burning leaves was quite prevalent as residents
begin the tedious job of preparing their yards for
another season.

Councillor Wilder pointed
out that ratepayers cannot bor-
row money in the bank at six
per cent.
Clerk Brokenshire suggested
that council leave a final de-
cision on the matter until the
mill rate is set later this year.
Another proposal by Wilder
was to provide the machinery
to allow ratepayers to pay a
large percentage of their taxes
mid -way through the year. Al-
though council felt that the
book work entailed would be-
come an unnecessary burden, it
was agreed that further talks
on the subject could be bene-
ficial.
Dogs
A by-law covering stray dogs
was given first and second read-
ing and will be passed at next
Monday evening's meeting of
council.
Council recognizes that it is
possible that one dog could cost
council about $11.50 by the time
it is housed and fed for three
days at the pound with South
Huron Veterinary Clinic, given
a humane end if no owner is
found and finally destroyed.
The by-law is fashioned after
one in Stephen ,Township and
suggestions put forth by the
clinic.
