The Board of stewards of Hensall United Church present- ed William Gibson, prior to his departure for Australia, with a Bible and pen and pencil set in recognition of his service as custodian, Mr. Gibson was also ue� honored with a very unique gift on Tuesday, January 31, by the Brownies, and many gifts from friends including a set of lug- gage. At a curling social at the Hen sall Arena Friday night, a draw was made for the following prizes and the winners were first prize, Kroehler platform rocker, Trevor Wilson, Hensall second prize, Cooey bridge set Melvin Glanville, Hensall; third prize, flight luggage, Linda Mock, Hensall. 0 Amber Rebekahs Pian Birthday The regular meeting of Am- ber Rebekah Lodge was held last Wednesday with noble grand Mrs. Lindsay Eyre pre- siding. A donation was made for the United Nations Student Pilgrimage, which is sponsored by the Rebekah and Oddfellow lodges. Final plans were made for the annual birthday party Feb- ruary 15. An invitation was accepted to attend the meeting at Pride of Huron Lodge, Exe- ter on March 15, when the as- sembly president, Mrs. Pauline Taylor, of Kingston, will be a special guest. The OP&T euchre will be held Friday, February 10, and the dessert euchre is scheduled for March 29, afternoon and evening. ZURICH CITIZENS NEWS ONE OF ZURICH'S oldest sweethearts is Mrs, Katie Meidinger who will observe her 96th birthday on Tuesday, February 14 —Valentine's Day. Mrs. Meidinger, who re- sides at the Queensway Nursing Home in Hensall, is usually in good health, although she was confined to bed for a few days recently. The Citizens News takes this opportunity to congratulate Mrs. Meidinger and suggest that all her friends and relatives get together to make Tuesday the best birth-, day every for a lovely lady. Unit 4 of UCW Discuss Chapter Of Study Book "Giving Our Best for a Better World" was used as the theme of the February meeting of Unit four of Hensall United Church Women on Thursday afternoon. Leader Mrs. James McAllister presided. Devotional was given by Mrs. H. McMurtrie on "the value of humor and laughter". Mrs. E. Chipchase dealt with the study book, using a chapter on the Protestants of Lower Canada, the early days of church work up to recent years. Many .calls on the sick and shut-ins were reported. A Valentine contest was conducted by Mrs. W. H. Weeks. Activities of the near future were discussed, including the annual quilting project begin- ning Monday, February 6; a film is to be shown at the gen- eral meeting February 27, when all members are urged to at- tend: the World Day of Prayer on Friday, February 10, in St. Paul's Anglican Church at 3 p.m.; banquet for Brownies, Guides and their mothers on February 22; the centennial pioneer supper on April 12; the Huron Presbyterial in Wing - ham, February 21, with speaker Rev. Gordon Hunter; and a mission festival announced for Goderich, April 2. Mrs. Pearl Shaddick was host- ess for this meeting, and Mrs. Leona Parke and her commit- tee served tea. The project "A world of food in Canada" was instructed by Miss Sharon Carroll, home economist for Huron, and Miss Carol Wood, home economist of Oxford County, to the 34 leaders and assistants of 4-H girls' clubs. District and number of clubs represented were: Hurondale, three; Crediton, two; Dashwood, two; Hensall, two; Zurich, two; Elimville, three; Kippen, one; Grand Bend, one. Hay 262,2509 HENSALL United Investment Services Ltd. crena ewe 3 Married 50 Years Ago A family gathering was held in the Legion Hall, Hensall, on Saturday, February 4, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Volland, of Hensall, on the occasion of their diamond wedding anni- versary. Members of their family at- tending the dinner were their daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Vera) Johnston, of Brucefield; Mrs. Irene Finlayson, of Hensall; Mrs. Louis (Beatrice) Taylor, of Varna; and sons, Clarence, Hen- sall, and Bruce, Goderich. Formerly Elizabeth Albrecht, Mrs. Volland is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Albrecht, and her husband is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. •Conrad Volland, all of Hay Township. The couple were married in Clinton by the late :Rev. Stewart. They were un- attended. Following their mar- riage they farmed in Hay and Tuckersmith townships before going to Goderich where they lived for 33 years, taking up residence in. Hensall in 1966. Mrs. Volland, 83, and " Mr. Volland, 85, enjoy fairly good health, Mrs. Vollancl is able to care for her home. They can recall their wedding day with plenty of snow and having to go through many pitch holes with the horse and cutter on their wedding trip. In addition to their family, the couple have 16 grand -chil- dren and 18 great -grand -chil- dren. At the dinner, catered by the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, the head table centred a three - tiered wedding cake, flanked with white mums, daffodils and pink and white tapers. - The celebrants were showered with gifts including a living -room rug from their family and a clock from their grand -children, also money, flowers, congratu- latory messages from neighbors and friends, and from Rt. Hon. John Deifenbaker; a scroll from Premier Roberts; Hon. C. S. MacNaughton, and Robert E. McKinley, MP for Huron. The evening concluded with a so- cial hour of cards.
