completed projects, which have
taken up a great deal of the
board's time during the past two
years.

construction costs amounted to
approximately $367,000. At

Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Denomme
of this highway, being the oc-
casion of their 28th wedding
anniversary and also Mr. Den-
omme's 51st birthday. Such
occasions •only come once a
year and it is always pleasing
for children to attend to offer
their best wishes to their par-
ents and many more happy
years in their married life, and
many more happy birthdays.
There were also other callers
who offered their best wishes
to Mr. and Mrs. Denomme.
Early Settlers
After the winter months had
passed away and only on cer-
tain occasions would the people
in the parish get together for
an evening. Spring and sum-
mer work had started, which
meant the clearing of land,
burning huge piles of logs
which today would be worth
piles of money, and put their
owners on easy street for the
rest of their natural lives. There
was not much seeding done but
the settlers were kept busy
clearing land and putting up
the necessary log buildings to
improve their property. Need-
less to say those who had left
their settlement in its infancy
and returned years later and
even the return of some today,
are amazed to see their native
parish which was when they
left it almost a wilderness. They
find it today one of the most
beautiful ones in this part of
Western Ontario. Most of the
log houses, with the exception
of a few that are still left, are
replaced with modern new
homes and the conveniences to
make work much easier. The
pioneers also had to build their
own roads, putting huge cedar
logs crossways to fill in mucky
spots for walking and as well
horse-drawn vehicles. Today
modern road equipment is keep-
ing highways in good repair to
make travelling easier the year
round. Those who have been
absent for years only have
faint memories of their native
land of birth.
