H CITIZENS NEWS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER. 15, PM Clinton Station Welcomes Guests To Celebrate 25th Anniversary Occasion During the week of Septem- ber 12-17 Canadian Forces Base 'Clinton will celebrate the 25th anniversary of radar train- ing in Canada. Twenty-five years ago the British and Canadian govern- ments decided that radar train- ing school in Canada was es- sential to the war effort. ,A location in Canada was neces- sary because it was removed from the scene of hostilities and close to the source of Canadian manpower. In the early stages of the Second World War radar was highly secret subject. It was, therefore. important to choose a fairly isolated area in order to ensure security. The selec- tion of Clinton as a suitable site was also influenced by the proximity of the cliffs on the shores of Lake Huron which were similar to those in Eng- land. Work commenced at Clinton in April, 1941, 120 buildings were constructed and several 360 -foot radar towers were erected. On Friday, September 16, Air Zurich Kings Lose Final Game of Series To Wilkesport Despite Heavy Hitting The Zurich Kings were elimi- nated from further competition in the OBA Intermediate D playoffs last 'Saturday, when they were edged 5-4 in the third game of their best -of -three series with the Wilkesport War- riors. The game was played in Wilkesport. Although they out bit the victors 11-5, the locals could not bunch their safeties when they needed them most. They left 10 runners on the bases throughout the nine -inning con- test. Zurich scored one run in the first inning when Earl Wagner singled, went to second on a ground ball and then scored on Bruce Horton's ground rule double over the left -field fence. They added another marker in the fourth when Stade singled, Overholt double and Johnston also singled to send the runner across the plate. Their final two runs came in the ninth, when they made a determined bid to knot the score. Bob Johnston reached first on a fielder's choice, after two were out, and then Wagner worked a base on balls. A double to deep centre sent both runners across the plate, but the boys could not come up with the ex- tra run they needed to tie the score. Wilkesport scored two runs in their half of the first inning, when they worked two bases on balls and came through with a double. They added two more in the fifth on a Zurich error, a hit batter, a sacrifice and a double. Their final tally came in the sixth when they com- bined two walks with a single and a double. Jim Pfaff started on the mound for Zurich and deserved better fate than to be the losing pitcher. In the first five and two-thirds innings he gave up only three hits, although he walked five and hit two batters. Dick Bedard came on in relief and finished the game, giving up two hits and one base on balls. Pfaff struck out three haters and Bedard one. Don O'Brien, Bruce Horton and Jim Pfaff supplied the punch at the bat for Zurich, each with two safeties. Bob Johnston, Earl Wagner, Robert McNaughton, Rick Stade and Phil Overholt each came through with one safety.
