(Continued from last week)
After the tree that struck and
killed my pal started sweeping,
in camp life it means swing-
ing, both he and I ran to the
right each holding one end of
the cross -cut saw in one hand
and he holding kerosene bottle
and wedge, while I held axe and
measuring pole in the other
hand. We then had run about
20 feet to the right for safety,
but the sweeper hitting the fell
tree on the stump caused it to
glance in our direction. My
pal was the victim as a large
limb struck him, breaking his
neck, his right arm in four dif-
ferent places and also his right
leg, causing the bone to pierce
through the skin and entering
in sandy soil about a foot and
with the sudden jar he was
knocked down. I stood erect
and for some time stunned but
not hurt, only to find my mack-
inaw shirt partly pulled out
from my covering. My friend
still held the handle of the saw
in one hand while I had the
other end. It being a top-heavy
tree, I was fastened in the
limbs and could not pull myself
out. I had already screamed
for help. I cannot remember
the words I used but it was
only a few minutes before help
came. Frank Denomme, of this
neighborhood, was the first to
arrive while others were only

When the boys arrived on
the scene 1 was speechless for
some time. They realized my
position in the accident so for
some time they remained mum
not even offering to free me
from where I was held fast,
and perhaps at the time being
helpless myself. My pal seemed
longer than what he was. • I
then regained my senses and
my first words to the boys were
to free my pal's bloody and
helpless body as soon as possi-
ble; there was only the axe that
I used; in their quick rush to
come to me they were not aware
of what had happened, so the
shanty boys began breaking the
limbs, that held me fast, with
their hands while other were
