Bayfield Acts To
Prevent Damage
y Loose Dogs
BAYFIELD — At a regular
meeting •of the Bayfield council
on Monday last, Reeve F. A.
Clift reported having received
several complaints regarding
damage by dogs.
He said that despite posting
of a notice ordering that all
dogs be tied in accordance with
an existing by-law, many dogs
are still allowed to roam at
large.
Council discussed the situa-
tion and agreed that action
must be taken to enforce the
order in the interests of the
residents, particularly in view
of the need for continuing pre-
cautions against the spread of
rabies. Accordingly they have
instructed Constable John Lind-
say to warn the owners of of-
fending animals on one occa-
sion only.
Discussion of the need for a
by-law governing trailer homes
was deferred for action at the

next meeting.
A delegation from the Bay-
field Businessmen's Association
supporting a letter to council
requesting that itinerant trad-
ers be required to pay a tax
when operating in Bayfield, was
received. Council referred the
request to their financial com-
mittee for action.
Dr. Aldis, MOH, and Bruce
Lobb, public health inspector,
each addressed council on the
future prospects of water sup-
ply and waste disposal in Bay-
field. The water supply appears
to be satisfactory and adequate
to meet anticipated require-
ments for some years.

Now Is Time to
Plant Dahlias
In late summer and fall there
are few plants with the size and
color range of dahlias, says hor-
ticulurists with the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture. They
can be the highlight o
f any fall
garden with sizes ranging from
pompom to the dinner -plate
sized, decorative type.
Dahlias are grown from tub-
ers which may be started in-
doors or planted directly into
the garden. They should be
planted four inches deep and
the tubers laid in the hole hor-
izontally.
These plants like a soil that
is high in organic matter and
respond well to an addition of
three ounces of bone meal per
square yard. They prefer neu-
tral, alkaline soil to acid soils.
Throughout the season light
feeding with a liquid fertilizer
will help to produce an abun-
dance of bloom. Dahlias, since
they grow so quickly, must be
well watered, as any dry periods
will cause a check in growth.
A •compost mulch is of benefit
in keeping the soil moist.

With Fireworks
Before firing your display:
a few elementary precautions
should b e taken i n order that
the rules of fireworks safety be
maintained.
Remember that younger
children will always be fascin-
ated by fireworks and make a
good audience, but they should
N 0 T participate in the actual
firing of the pieces,
One person should be
in charge of the display,
With the single exception of
sparklers, N 0 firework i s de-
signed to be held in the hand
when lighted. Older children
should be . taught to participate
under adult supervision.
Read the printed instructions
on each piece and plan the ord-
er of firing. Keep in mind that
the firing location should be
clear of overhead obstructions,
trees or wiring.
Assemble buckets or boxes
of sand or a wheelbarorow fill-
ed with earth to be used as your
firing base.
Items such as roman candles
and other long pieces should be
buried at least halfway down
in the sand in your container
and set at a 10 degree angle
from spectators.
If containers of sand are not
a va ila b 3 e. dig holes in the
ground deep enough to bury
the firework pieces halfway up
the barrel. Stamp the ground

Fall Fairs Start
Season In May
Ontario's "Fall Fair" season
gets under way at an early date
this year with Richmond Hill
Fair having opened its annual
two-day event on May 14. From
that date, until November 12
firmly around each piece before
firing,
Have a large container such as
a metal garbage can available
to dispose of used firework
pieces. When the display is over
these items can be sprinkled
with a garden hose.
A glowing cigarette or cigar
makes a good substitute for
as an igniter. Hold same at arms
length, apply to the wick and
stand clear immediately.
