MEMORIAL TO BROTHER ANDRE —
Beside St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church,
St. Joseph, stands this monument which was
built some years ago as a memorial to
Brother Andre. The money for the memorial
was raised through gifts of members of the
parish, along with other friends. The in-
scription, written in French, says, "Gifts of
the parishioners former members of :the
parish, and others, in memdry of Rev.
Brother Andre, who lived for some time
among us." The Cantin family, of St. Joseph,
with whom Brother Andre visited, spear-
headed the drive to build the memorial. In
the weekly news budget of St. Joseph, the
correspondent, Alfred Ducharme, is currently
telling of the visits of Brother Andre to the
St. Joseph Parish, in 1917 and 1922.
predictionsas to the future. Lake Huron, all remained dor-
mant. Occasionally when you
would meet with members of
the Cantin family they were
The passing weather is injurious
to field plants and grain crops.
No one can tell when such will
cease; no one is able to give
warning on days ahead to safe-
guard the crops or anything
which could be destroyed by
broken weather.
Settlers in the primitive days
of this part of Western Ontario
had accepted weather signs from
their ancestors. One which fits
well for this passing month of
August is that any month with
five Sundays is a wet month
with much broken weather
which causes much delay in
farm work and as well is detri-
mental to crops in the passing
of time.
Cycles create such events and
sometimes last as long as three
months. Nothing so far has
been invented to prevent it.
Let us hope we are not being
witnesses to such a destructive
period of time which could cur-
tail the posperity of those af-
fected.
This weather forecasting of
our early pioneers is a heritage
from their ancestors, They did
not only have a month with five
Sundays to determine the
weather, but they also watched
the clouds drifting in the space
with an opposite wind pushing
then. That meant a storm was
in the air. If it was cloudy,
that meant rain. If the sky was
reddish in the southwest, that
meant nice weather.
They had many other signs
which many times proved cor-
rect. Then they would make
their plans for the few days
ahead.
Look at your calendar for
this passing month of August
with its five, Sundays. We
have had wet and disagreeable
weather and so far true to the
latter.
When predicting rain for a
month of five Sundays they did
not mean a daily downpour—no.
But broken weather such as this
passing month of August has
had and we are convinced.

Obituary
Mrs. Emma Racey
Mrs. Emma Racey, 100, of 584
Talbot St., London, died Sun-
day at St. Mary's Hospital, Lon-
don, after a long illness.
Mrs. Racey was born in Zur-
ich and had lived in London
for the past 20 years. She was
the former Emma Greb, and
was a member of Trinity Lu-
theran Church.
Widow of Henry Racey, she
is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Della Berry, of London; two
sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Schneu-
ker, of Milverton, and Mrs,
Carrie Stickels, of Detroit; and
a brother, Edward Greb, of De-
troit.
Service was held at the Need-
ham funeral home Tuesday at 1
p.m. Rev. William 3. Macgreg-
or, of Trinity Lutheran Church,
officiated. Burial was in Avon
Cemetery, Stratford.
tribute to him.
Forty years or more past on
when Joseph Cantin, a son of
the founder of St. Joseph, was
inspired or perhaps felt that
justice had not been given to
the Brother and started a cam-
paign to raise funds to erect a
statue of St. Joseph and Broth-
er Andre in one, on the church
ground.
It was on April 8, 1955, Easter
Eve, that he asked the approval
of Father Poisson and was
granted it. Already Mr. Cantin
had many envelopes well -word-
ed and asked permission from
Father Poisson to have ushers
distribute them at all Easter
masses. Great was the re-
sponse.
