ST. JOSEPH and DRYSDALE
CAI,. FRED DUCHARME. Correavondenti
On Wednesday evening last
June 17, 1964, the little village
of St. Joseph on this Bluewater
highway was the scene of a
very enjoyable event when the
Burgess's, the business proprie-
tors of this burg, gave an open
air dance on their newly -paved
frontage, free to the public.
The object of the event was
perhaps in a way to thank those
who had patronized them in
their flourishing business and
perhaps also to make new
friends which to them will mean
new customers. Even though
the evening weather was not
too promising for such an occa-
sion, more than seven hundred
persons took part. The Blue -
water had a large turnout, also
many from surrounding villages
and concessions. To add to the
number, motorists travelling
along the highway stoped,
which increased the attendance,
The Burgess's came to St. Jo-
seph's three years ago, June 15,
coming here from London and
buying the property from Mr.
and Mrs, Hector Forcier, and
opened up the general business
which they have today. To
have it convenient for them-
selves and their business, it was
necessary that changes be made
on the property such as re-
modelling the building to give
them the necessary space for
their general store. On their
arrival in St, Joseph they were
complete strangers and to open
up a business in a strange com-
munity there was much for
them to do, to win the confi-
dence of the public. But that
was readily accomplished by
them by exercising their pleas-
ant personality. They have also
built a comfortable home on
one of their lots to accommo-
date them and their family.
In their open air party •there
was much amusement and
gaiety during the evening in the
way of square dancing and
other dames to attract those
who were sitting around. For
the square dances the callers
were Avila Ducharme of the
Bluewater south and Mrs. Percy
Bedard of the Bluewater north.
Both of the callers are gifted
with smooth voices to give pep
to those on the floor.
Prizes were given for spot
dances and the first on the list
were Monica Charrette and
Dave Ducharrne, winning two
and a half gallons of Bisset's
ice cream. Next were Betty
Ann Denonune and Michael
Corriveau winning a free dry
cleaning of suits from Grand
Bend Cleaners, The last on the
list were Ilector Forcier and
Mrs, James Draymond, also free
dry cleaning, Master of cere-
monies was Mr. Ted Hayward,
of Goderich.
The announcement was sup-
plied by the lake shore elec.
tronic sound system, from
Sarnia, operated by Alphonse
Geoffrey. Dominic Geoffroi,
Gerard Geoffroi and R. Schroe-
der, The management had
words of praise for all who took
part in the dance.
People attended from Lon-
don, Hamilton, Stratford, Sarnia,
Goderich and Detroit. All were
impressed by the good conduct
of those attending with nothing

happening to stain the evening.
Motorists stopped to satisfy
their curiosity and to witness
an open air dance. The Bur-
gess's were grateful to all who
took part and the great number
who answered in person to their
invitation.
The Sopha home was the
scene of a very enjoyable past
week when their children and
some grandchildren spent the
past week with them. In the
company were Mr. and Mrs,
Larry Sopha, newlyweds; Mr.
and Mrs. Lawrence Sopha and
family, also a birthday party to
a grandson, Kenneth Sopha, All
of the above mentioned were
from Detroit, and during the
week two well-filled cars from
the Sopha home motored to the
Pines, Chatham, to visit an-
other grand - daughter, Sister
Francis Theresa. On the week-
end most of their family joined
together at the Sopha home.
Mr. and Mrs. William Weising
and their daughter, Mrs. R.
Rouholm, all of Sarnia, called
on Mr. and Mrs. F. Ducharme
on Sunday last on their way to
Goderich.
On Tuesday last Mrs, Leo P.
Ducharme and daughter, in
company with Mrs, Howard
Klumpp, of Dashwood, motored
to London where Mrs, Dtk-
charme's daughter had an eye
test.
