Grass For Calves
Is Recommended
Calves can make excellent
gains on pasture with salt and
bone meal as the only supple-
ments, states Vern Miles of the
Canada Department of Agricul-
ture's Animal Research Institute
at Ottawa.
He says the calves should be
rotated on pastures with short,
rapidly growing swards.
At the Central Experimental
Farm winter -raised calves re-
ceive no more than 100 pounds
of whole milk and 35 pounds of
skim milk powder but they have
early access to second -cut hay
and a limited amount of meal.

Allied Meat Enterprises the
share sales campaign was rev-
iewed. Up until the end of May
close to $400,000 has been sold.
This is perhaps a record of share
capital raised by a new Co -Op-
erative in the first four months..
It is gratifying to have such
strong support frome livestock
producers and is even more en-
couraging when we consider
that only a comparatively small
percentage of the producers, as
yet, have been canvassed.
With something over 3,500

are four to six months old have
become used to consuming lar-
ge quantities of roughage. When
put on good pasture they gain
as much as two pounds daily.
Calves less than four months
old can make excellent use of
pasture but should be fed more
milk before having to rely on
pasture alone.
Quality of forage and manage-
ment of pasture should receive
careful attention, warns Mr.
Miles. A permanent paddock
close to the barn is not satisfac-
tory for calves. In addition to
the health hazards from paras-
ites, the pasture is usually too
poor a quality.
The calves should be sprayed
regularly to control flies.

encouraging,
we must not rest on our laurels.
It is forecast that, by mid -1962,
the marketing both hogs and
cattle will be considerably high-
er, thus it is desirable that all
possible competition be created
in the market place. With our
objective of two million in share
capital accomplished by Novem-
ber 30, we could expect to have
our "Fame" plants in operation
by late summer of 1962.
In a poll of the members of
the board of directors it was in-
teresting to find that the main
enterprise of nine was milk pro-
duction, of seven was bee pro-
duction and only two whose
main enterprise was hog pro-
duction. The board was about
equally divided between hogs
and poultry for their second
farm enterprise with a few hav-
ing all three. One member had
sheep raising as his second en-
terprise.
Since their are so many beef
producers and dairy men on the
board it would indicate that
there is greater dissatisfaction
with the marketing of cattle
than the other livestock.
It was reported that a produc-
er shipped a few steers through
a drover to Toronto (over 100
miles). They sold for 38 cents
graded blue brand and dressed
51.8 percent on the Toronto
live weight. This returned less
than 20 cents on the live Tor-
onto weight. At the same time
good steers were being quoted
at $21.50 to $23.50 in Toronto.
