The Grand Bend and Area
Chamber of Commerce have
sent four letters to Parliament
members in the area, request-
ing a postponement of the new
sales tax which is scheduled to
come into effect on September.
1.
The letter points out that the
tourist business is one of the
summer resort's largest indus-
tries and the "two months
prior to the sales tax begin-
ning are so busy, as to make
it impossible to find time to
adjust to the charging of the
sales tax."
The Chamber also explains
that so many of the working
staff in any resort are high
school and college students
who must, of a necessity ter-
minate their period of employ-
ment in order to return to
their homes in preparation for
the school semester.
"This, on the weekend the
sales tax starts, is the busiest
holiday weekend in the year."
The Grand Bend group re-
quested that the inception of
the tax be delayed until the
15th of September to reduce
the burden placed on the var-
ious operators in the summer
resort.
The four members have been
asked to arrange a meeting
with the Chamber to discuss
the matter.

High Honour To
Deceased Lady
(By our Hensall correspondent)
The family of the late Mrs.
George T. Mickle, of Riclgetown,
has received a high honor by
the Dominion Board of the Un-
ited Church of. Canada, and sign-
ed by the president and secre-
tary, for the leadership and. of-
fices Mrs. Mickle held for so
many years. She was president
for 22 years of the Woman's As-
sociation of the Erie Street Un-
ited Church, and honorary presi-
dent and life member.
For many years Mrs. Mickle
was president of the Woman's
Missionary and honorary presi-
dent and life member. The hon-
our stated when she became
honorary president of both soc-
ieties, she gave valued leader-
ship for many years and also
said she was a true Christian
and will always be remembered
for her years of service in one
of the United Churches of Can-
ada.
This was the first time this
honor has been bestowed upon
a family of the Erie United
Church.
Transport Minister Rowntree
in a statement to the press Tues-
day said, "In line with the Gov-
ernment's stepped-up highway
safety program, new regulations
regarding the standard of hy-
draulic brake fluids, which may
be sold to the public, have been
approved."
"It must be realized by ev-
eryone that an inferior grade
brake fluid is a driving hazard,
and can well be the cause of an
accident," the Minister contin-
ued. " In these days of high
density traffic and increased
highway driving speeds, good
and reliable brakes are a safety
must."
Mr. Rowntree said all brake
fluids offered for sale must
meet the standards and specif-
ications as approved by the Soc-
iety of Automotive Engineers
as satisfactory and was the
standard recommended for use
throughout Canada and the Un-
ited States.
A container o f hydraulic
brake fluid complying with
these specifications must be so
designated, he continued, and
must bear a label containing
the words—Heavy Duty "Sae
7 or 1" or "SAE 7 r 33" accor-
ding to its contents.
The Minister said these reg-
ulations were effective immed-
iately.
