Had Interesting Trip
Travelling Through South America
1By Mrs. Ward Fritz)
People who are not well acquain-
ted with South America sometimes
think all the countries are alike,
On the contrary, they are very
different from each other in ter-
rain, natural resources and climate.
One-half of the population is one
combination or another of white,
negro or Indian, The white ex-
plorers were Spanish and Portu-
guese and the Spanish influence
in language and architecture is
prevalent to this day.
There is very little race preju-
dice but there is a tremendous dif-
ference in the wealthy and poor
way of life.
Leaving New York at 9 a.m., we
were in Rio de Janiero at 9 p.m.
Flying in a Pan American Clipper,
we were fortunate to see the coast-
line of Trinidad and the captain
invited us to view the mighty Am-
azon river and its tributaries from
the crew's quarters. The panor-
ama of Rio is breathtaking at night.
Statue of Christ
As we neared the runway, the
famous Copacabana beach area was
easily detected, also famous Sugar
Loaf mountain and the statue of
Christ which stands guard over
each end of Rio's famous harbour.
The city is built on a deep land -
in 1567 by the Portuguese con -
locked bay and there are many mil-
es of attractive beaches, Founded
conciuistatdors, the city served as
capital of Brazil until 1960 Last
year a new city, Brasilia, was built
were told the modernistic city is
600 miles in the interior.
As our time was limited, we did
not take the tourist flight but we
weretold the moderistic city is
beautiful.
One of the main industries of
Brazil is the mining of semi-prec-
ious stones. In Rio the jewellery
mounted with topaz, aquamarine,
sapphire, onyx, etc., was most at-
tractive.
Our hotel was located on the
famous Copacabana beach. The
mosaic sidewalks follow the shore-
line for several miles.
On a city tour we took the cable
car to the top of the mountain
where the statue of Christ is lo-
cated. Travelling up the side of
the mountain we passed through
a tropical area of heavy vegetation,
Bananas and oranges, orchids and
other tropical flowers were in
abundance.
Flying from Rio de Janeiro to
Buenos Aires was a three-hour
trip. Passing over the sparse area
of southern Brazil, we were amaz-
ed at the countryside of eastern
Argentina. It is a vast rolling
green area of cattle land and flax
and grain districts.
LC
Visit Estate
Our reason for this South Am-
erican holiday was the kind invita-
tion we had received from Dutch
friends—Count and Countess M. F,
von Limburg-Stirum. We had met
these friends in Zurich, Switzerland
when we were touring Europe.
Two years ago they moved to Ar-
gentina and purchased a 7,000 -
acre "Estancia" (estate) 250 miles
northwest of Buenos Aires in Santa
Fe province.
The countess met us at Buenos
Aires airport and we remained in
the city two days before leaving
for the ranch. "B.A.", as it is com-
monly called, is a very beautiful
capital as well as a leading port
and textile manufacturing city.
Personally, it became one of my
favorite cities in the matter of a
few days, The main streets are
wide with beautiful boulevards of
flowering trees and shrubs.
Travelling to the "Estancia San
Pedro" on a good paved road we
passed through rich countryside.
Cattle were everywhere and also
horses in many areas, Santa Fe
province is cattle country and
known as the Savanna district, fine
grassland with scattered small
trees and. where the land is mois-
ter, open woodlands.
On reaching the ranch, Spanish-
speaking servants all came to greet

us at the gate. The pink plastured
house bad been built around 40
years ago and consisted of 18
rooms and ssix guest rooms. On
the property was a large tennis
court, a swimming pool and a ser-
pentine -designed artificial lake
where one could use a row boat.
As the property was in a fairly
remote area there was a lighting
plant and an oil heating system
used in winter months.
Variety of Animals
Our hosts were very fond of an-
imals and a variety of pets --a don-
key, colts, dogs and cats and a
lamb roamed at will—some with.
tiny Swiss bells around their necks.
The chief crops raised on the
property were wheat, maize (corn)
and sunflowers. The latter's seed
are used for oil. There wes several
hundred Aberdeen Angus cattle
and many fine riding horses.
The ""Gauchos" or cowboys were
excellent riders and took great
pride in their horses. Bravo, Jose
and their sons were a sight to be-
hold when rounding up the cattle.
The food was delicious, not high-
ly spiced like Mexican foods, As
this time of year is their "Septem-
ber weather," the fruits were just
starting to ripen. Figs melons,
avocados and papayas were enjoy-
ed, but the lemons, limes and man-
darin oranges required another
month of growth.

The count, whoo is a chemical en-
gineer, is a brilliant student and

were in English, so I had quite an
experience browsing through the
library.
Eye-opening Trip
After a 10 -day visit, we return-
ed to Buenos Aires by railway. On
a tour to get to the "heart of a
country," one should experinece a
train trip. We boarded a "vacation
special," so you readers can vis-
ualize the confusion, On top of
it all there was no English speak-
ing conductor!
We stood up for 30 miles until
we realized we were in the wrong
coach. However, the trip was most
interesting and a Buenos Aires
chartered accountant who could
speak some English "adopted" us
and took us to our hotel.
On making our reservations for
Lima, Peru, we had a choice of dir-
ect flight by jet or a longer route
over the Andes mountains by pro-
peller plane• We were not sorry
to have decided the Tatter route.
Crossing the Andes was one of
