Dominion Hotel Built By Late John Prang
Now In Third Geller tion Of hnstons
The first unit of the Dominion
Hotel, which is celebrating it's
grand opening tonight, was built
some 90 years ago, by the late Jo-
hn Prang. At that time the build-
ing operated under the name of
the Huron Hotel. Later the business
was sold to Abel Walper, who add-
ed an addition to the building, and
later sold out to Charles Greb. Mr.
Greb added another addition to the
structure, and in 1901 sold the est-
ablishment to Charles Schumaker,
Mr. Shumaker in turn sold the
hotel to R. R. Johnston, a grand-
father of the present owner, in
1903. From that time until now, wi-
th the exception of a period of ti-
me between 1920 and 1929, the bu-
siness remained ni the Johnston
name. During those nine years, the
hotel was operated by Casper Wal -
per and Alex Voisin.
In 1929 the father of the present
owner, the late Wellington John-
ston, took over the operation of
the business, and continued as the
proprietor until 1945, when he soid
to his son, Ross.
Until 1914 the hotel was fully
licenced, when a vote on the Can-
ada Temperance Act was held and
carried, which meant the closing
of all licenced premises.
In 1934, under the Hepburn gov-
ernment, a men's beverage room
was approved for the Dominion
Hotel, and it was opened until 1946
when the C. T. A. was upheld.
In November, 1959, a vote was
held in Huron County to decide
whether or not to abolish the an-
cient Canada Temperance Act. By
an overwhelming majority, the age-
old act was voted out, and Huron
County again came under the rule
of the Liquor Control Act-

Fast March, the voters in the vill-
age of Zurich voted on whether or
not they wanted legal liquor out-
lets. By a still greater majority
than the CTA received, a dining
lounge, .a cocktail lounge, and a
men's beverage room was approved
by the electors, The vote came ab-
out at the request of the Zurich
and District Chamber of Commerce,
who felt outlets in the village wo-
uld be beneficial to the business
places in the area.
Now, almost a year later, Zurich
can boast of having one of the
most modern licenced hotels in On-
tario.
Noted For Fine Food
For many years the Dominion
Hotel has ben noted for it's excep-
tionally fine food. Every week a
number of banquets are held in
the dining room, and each Sunday
hundreds of guests are served din-
ners, some coming from as far aw-
ay as London and Sarnia. The hotel
is also the meeting place for the
Zurich Lions Club and the Cham-
ber of Commerce, who hold regular
dinner me .::.Qa there.. They spec-
ialize in steak, chicken, and fish
dinners.
Fifteen Employees
At the present time there are a
total of 15 people employed at the
Dominion Hotel, mostly full-thne,
with several on a part-time basis.
It is expected that in the summer
time this establishment will be a
terrific tourist attraction.
