Grand Bend Chamber Urges ' eve s pent
Ski Lifts ay Se Built in Pinery Park
1, 1
C'. F. "Zeb" Janes, Lantbton
East MPP, told the member: of
the Grand Bend and Area Chamber
of Cotutnerce that there is "a de-
fintc possibility that ski lifts will;
be built at the Pinery Provincial
Park..'
Mr. Janes, along with Gar Mey-
ers. superintendent of the park,
mot with the Chamber on Tuesday,
,Tat:wiry 3. to discuss details for
the addition of facilities at the
park.
Erie 1lcllroy, past president of
the chamber, presented a brief to
the meeting, and asked Mr. Janes
to turn it over to the minister of
lands and forests.
The brief prepared by the
chamber, drew attention to the fact
that `not enough development had
been considered at the Pinery to
entice out-of-town skiers." It poin-
ted out that several Detroit buses
pass right through Grand Bend on
their way to take passengers to ski
resorts in Northern Ontario.
The Chamber of Commerce also
pointed out that proper facilities
in the Pinery could possibly mean
as much as $160,000 worth of bus-
iness to Grand Bend and area dur-
ing the winter months.
This figure was based on estima-
tes that there are 220 motel and
hotel rooms available in Grand
Bend, and that each viistor would
spend an average of $15 a day
while enjoying the facilities of the
park.
This estimate is $9 below the fi-
gure that the dep't of travel and
publicity sets for the average daily
spending tourists.
Orval Wassmann, president of
the chamber, pointed out that be-
sides the hotels and motels, other
businesses such as gas stations,
theatres, grocery stores and other
outlets would benefit from the in-
flux of winter visitors.

"We know these people want to
come here," Mr. Wassmann added.
"hut they say they like to ski—not
climb."
He pointed out that "people are
lazy today, and they want • to en-
joy the sport with as little effort
as possible."
(lar Myers, park sup't, pointed
out that the department had star-
ted out small because they knew
nothing about building ski runs
and toes. "We have to have expert
advice to help us as we move," he
added, "so we won't make any
costly mistakes."
Mr. Janes backed up Mr. My-
ers' statement, and added that the
department would only move as
fast as public interest warranted,
"I'll be happy to present this brief
to the minister," he said, "and if
he feels that lifts are warranted.,
I'ni confident that they will build
them."
Facilities Popular
Mr. Myers told the meeting that
the ski runs and tobaggan hills hacl
been very popular so far, especially
during the holidays at Christmas
and New Year's. He reported that
approximately 200 people used the
facilities on New Year's Monday.
The Pinery superintendent men-
tioned that the hills hal been plan-
ned in such a way that one lift
would accommodate skiers on both
hills.
He said that a new parking lot
had been built near the runs, so
cars would not have to park on the
roadway through the Pinery. The
new space will accommodate about
40 cars.
John Manore, a member of the
chamber, asked if a sign could be
placed so that the people would
know where the hills are. "People
know there is sking," he said, "but
they don't know exactly where."
Mr. Myers said that a sign was
being built to erect in the park,
but it was unlikely that any sign
would be placed along the high-
way.
The Chamber of Commerce plans
to ,sponsor a booth at the Sports-
man's show in Toronto this fall to
acquaint people with the new win-
ter facilities at Grand Bend in ad-
dition to the present summer at-
tractions.

Medical Officer
Warn Of Danger
Dr. R. M. Aldis, Huron MOH,
warned this week that persons
suffering from "intestinal flu"
should avoid contact with the very
young or the aged, and under no
Circumstances, should they visit a
patient in the hospital.
Two infant deaths have been re-
ported in the Goderich area al-
ready this year, and several per-
sons have been hospitalized with
severe cases in other centres.
As yet,•Dr. Aldis has not receiv-
ed any lab reports on the two
deaths, but they have been attri-
buted to "gastro-intestinal disor-
ders."
"Although often blamed on rich
holiday diet, many of these illnes-
ses are actually infectious," Dr. Al-
dis stated. "The common symptoms
are malaise, nausea, vomiting and
usually some diarrhea."
The Huron MOH stated that be-
cause many of these cases are viral
in origin, they do not respond
readily to the usual forms of treat-
ment. He warns that "if the ill-
ness strikes the very young or the
aged, it is most important to get
early medical attention."
