United Co -Operatives Debenture
Issue Is Completely Bought Up
An objective of one million dol-
lars by September 30, 1960 for a
debenture sales campaign by Uni-
ted Co -Operatives of Ontario, Wes-
ton, has been achieved, announced
Leonard Harman, General Mana-
ger. The debenture campaign got
underway in January to finance
continued growth of co-operative
services and facilities in Ontario,
UCO is one of seven regional co-
operative wholesales in Canada.
In 1959, it made a record mil -
;tion dollars net earnings after ta-
xes in feed and fertilizer manufac-
turing, and distribution of feed,
farm supplies, agricultural chemi-
cals, fertilizers, petroleum, and
marketing of livestock and grain.
Some $900,000 of this net earning
was returned to patrons in the
form of patronage dividends.
Rapid expansion of services in
processing and warehouse facili-
ties required new capital, and de-
bentures were solei in a concerted
drive to all interested investors.
Of the total 2,500 investors in
1100 debentures the majority are
farmers across Ontario. The de-
bentures' have appealed particu-
larly to investors because of a
practice maintained by UCO man-
agement of cashing the debentures
at par value ahead of maturity
date in case of • hardship on the
owner's part. Ten and twenty year
debentures earn six per cent in-
terest, while short term or five
year debentures earn five per cent
interst.

While in Dashwood recently,

END OF THE WORLD ?
Recently an article appeared in
a 'daily paper of South -Western
Ontario launched by the deader of
a small sect in Italy, where they
make their abode to pray and
serve God in their way. They are
stationed on the slope of one of
the highest mountains; "Mount
Blane."
This prediction is made by the
leader, by the name "Erman",
who. has assured a small group of
followers that the end of the
world would come on July 14,
1960, at the hour of 1.45 p.m. lo-
cal time, and 8.45 a.m., E.D.T., on
the dot.
This association, Who has made
ready for the supposed awaited
event, are perched high, nearly
7,000 feet above the flat of the
Earth. They are certain they will
be protected by God, and their re-
ligious quarters will be saved from
destruction. This leader "Erman"
formerly a professional gentleman
in the city of Milan, according to
his belief, his small group of 30
members will remain untouched
and given the authority to re-esta-
blish the world and will hence-
forth be conducted in a more spi-
ritual way. There will be remain-
ing on the face of the earth less
than 12 million people to start a
new, according to his way of see-
ing.
The destruction will come by
thernio nuclear war, earth quakes,
and rising tidal waves to wipe out
our present civilization. He will
await that all has blown over, and
then he will give orders to his
group to descend from the high
peak of the mountain to start re-
building the old world over, with
a more spiritual atmosphere than
the one at present.
It would be out of reason to put
trust and confidence in such a
prophecy relating to the end of
the world, for we believe that is
beyond human power, for that
which was created by the Divine
will be destroyed by the same.
Therefore it is folly to think of it.
But living in a fast world as to-
day, it would be well if something
did flare up to abolish some of
the dibotical passions that exist.
It would also help to weaken the
greed and glut, that which is de-
stroying the spiritual feeling. In
all a lesson would not be out of
place, and perhaps an example
would be given by those who reign
and guide destiny of mankind.
