Huron World Refugee Year Blitz
Campaign Results Said "Overwhelming"
It was announced today by John
Berry, Goderieh, that a total of
$13,627.97 has been contributed by
Huron County citizens in the Blitz
for World Refugee Year held in
relatives on Saturday last. While
on their holidays they will spend
a few days in Mount Carmel with
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Carnie.
Mrs. Virginia Denomme, of
Seaforth, spent a few days in this
vicinity with friends.
Mrs. William Flood and daugh-
ter, of Windsor, are spending a
few days with friends in this vi-
cinity.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Jeffrey
and two sons, Mark and Jimmy,
spent the long week end at the
Jeffrey home on the Blue Water
Highway, and with other relatives
in the surroundings.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ryder and
family, of London, were visitors
with the latter's parents for the
week end.
Week end visitors at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Remi Denomme
were Mr. and Mrs. Dennis De-
nomme, Toronto, Mr. and Mrs.
Emmanuel Cote, Windsor, Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Masse, Windsor, and
Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Meidinger.
May. The total represents appro-
ximately $4,000 above the target as
set in March by the Huron County
committee in charge, of which Mr.
Berry acted as treasurer.
The Blitz was unique in that
Huron County was the only county
in the province of Ontario that
was organized by a group of local
citizens for the purpose of raising
money to assist the Canadian Com-
mittee for World Refugee Year to
help clear the refugee camps in
Europe.
Mrs. Frank Fingland, Clinton,
who was instrumental in organizing
the blitz, described the result as
"overwhelming".
Rev. R. G. MacMillan, Goderich,
as campaign chairman, had work-
ing with him a large number of
volunteer citizens representing
each area of the county. Other
members of the county committee
indluded Mrs. Bernard Hall, Blyth,
secretary, and Mrs. C. A. Trott,
Clinton; publicity chairman.
A report on Huron County's ac-
complishments for World Refugee
Year will be personally presented
June 29 at Toronto by Mrs. Fing-
land, when she attends a special
meeting of the Canadian Commit-

tee for World Refugee Year to
mark its official termination. In-
vited guests from the federal go-
vernment and representatives of
42 national sponsoring organiza-
tions will be on hand to learn
the total fund-raising efforts from
Canada.
Of the $261,80 given by Zur-
ich, $136.80 was collected by the
local Brownies' organization. The
village council granted $100 to the
cause, and the Zurich Lions Club
$25. Ivan Kalbfleisch was cam-
paign chairman for the village.

A power mower is hardly an ef-
ficient tool when it chops off your
fingers and toes. Itsskill at firing
sticks, stones and pieces of wire
in all directions adds to its high
rating on the danger list. Here are
a few suggestions from safety spe-
cialists with the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture.
- Keep hands, feet and loose clo-
thing away from all moving parts
of the mower.
- Wear good, sturdy shoes.
Should the blades get to your feet,
there'll be some protection, at
least.
- Never leave a mower running
with no one to look after it.
- Know your machine. Be able
to disengage the clutch at the
least notice. Know the cutting
path of the blades with respect to
the mower housing.
- Never cut down a slope, always
sideways.
- Keep people (children in parti-
cular) out of the area to be mowed.
- Also keep people out of the
range of the grass discharge open-
ing. They can be easy targets for
flying stones and other hard ob-
jects.
- Disconnect the spark plug wire
before working around the blade
(such as in cleaning and sharpen-
ing). Mowers have been known to
re -start from the very slightest
turn of the blade.
- If you have an electric mower,
remember this: the blades are sitll
whirling around mighty fast, even
after you have shut off the pow-
er. Give them time to slow down
- and be safe.
