Harkness Evades Direct Answers As
Federation Men Ask For Facts
My J. CARL HEMINGWAY)
Two questions were put to the
Iion. Douglas Harkness, Federal
Minister of Agrieulture, in the
discussion period after his address
to the meeting of the Canadian
Federation of Agriculture:
First:: How could the value of
the Canadian dollar be reduced so
that agrieulture would be in a
more favourable export position?
Mr. Harkness didn't say whether
or not anything could be done
about the value of the dollar but
he did state that United States
investors were investing large
amounts into developing industries
and businesses in Canada and that
this was good for industrial'grow-
th of our country.
The fact that it is a detriment
to agriculture was of no concern
to the government.
Second: Why should imports of
pork be allowed into this country
to further depress our prioes?
Mr. Harkness went to some
length to explain that in recent
years American hogs were banned
due to a disease problem. This
problem has now been overcome
MIIIIIINIIIIME111111111111111=1111111111011110111111I
and there is now no logical reason
for Canada to restrict imports.
Mr. Harkness didn't point out
that the United States would have
placed restrictions on the imports
of Canadian pork because of the
deficiency payments plan had the
Canadian government not restrict-
ed our exports to the United States.
Also he didn't tell us that the
pork that may come in will have
been produced on government -
subsidized feed. Apparently our
government would have been much
smarter if it had paid the farmer
for each ton of feed used rather
than on the finished hog. Then
there would have been no need for
the export license.
Canadian farmers, I think, are
willing to compete with United
States farmers but not the United
States treasury.
United States farmers received in
direct subsidy $4.5 .billion dollars.
This means that for every dollar
received by the Canadian farmer
in the form of price supports his
American counterpart received
$225. We can hardly stand this

kind of competition.
Since apparently we can expect
little assistance from government
we will have to help ourselves.
This we can do if we are willing
to work together in the marketing
of our products. We have done it
successfully in wheat and white
beans. Let us extend our market-
ing efforts- to cover the rest of
our products. If we work together
it can be done.
Some "Don'ts" For
Hydro Users
DON'T put in a new fuse or re-
set the circuit breaker without
first disconnecting lamps and ap-
pliances which were in use when
the service went off. Otherwise,
you may blow the new fuse, cause
the circuit breaker to trip out im-
niediatety.- - - • .• — ..-aaaaaa ^
DON'T blame the manufacturer
or the dealer if your iron; toaster,
electric sauce pan, etc., seem 'to
heat slowly. Have your wiring
checked first.
DON'T change a fuse when your
hands are wet or when you are
standing on a damp floor, and
don't poke your fingers into the
opening.
DON'T use appliance's, especial-
ly portable ones, anywhere in
reach of the bathtub. This includ-
es radios.
• DON'T allow .the installation Of
outdoor outlets, or outlets in ares
where the floor may become wet
(.basement or garages), without a
grounding connection. Be sure the
appliances connected to than have
a similar grounding wire in the
cord.
DON'T try to plug all 'm"
kitchen appliances into a single
outlet at one time. Spread them
around among different outlets
and different, circuits if you can.
DON'T connect statio-' av mo-
tor operated appliances (washer,
oil burner, freezer, etc.) to a a ruife
which also serve lights. It causes
lights to blink annoyingly.
