Telephone Meeting
The annual meeting of the snbscri-
bers of the Hay Township Municipal
System was held in the Town Hall
here last Saturday. The hall was
filled and many interesting points re-
lating to the system were discussed.
Mr H H Neeb, reeve, occupied the
chair and F Bess, Sr., acted as secret-
ary'.
The annual report showed that
$1576,25 was on hand to the credit
of the system at the end of 1915, but
salaries due up the Ind of the -year re•
dnced this balance to $1026.25.
The money on hand show that th e
system is in good standing financially -
at present, but it was clearly shown
that it was operating at a loss and
that if some provision was not made in
a year or two the surplus would be
wiped out and a deficit result.
The cost to the township of operat-
ing and maintaining one telephone
for a year is about $13.50. . The sub-
scriber pays only $12 for this which
plainly shows that the surplus is being
used up at $1.50 per telephone per
year. The Hay system now has near-
ly 500 subscribers so the annual loss
would bo $750. This is a proven fact
and in another year at least, the coun-
cil will be forced to ileal with the mat
ter. It was suggested that the connci
make application to the Commission
at Toronto for permission to raise the
rate to subscribers from $12 to $14
a phone, but the meeting bolded that
it would be better to wait until next
year before acting in the matter,
Other matters relating to the proper
use of telephones, taking care of batt-
eries
ath
eries to prolong the life of the same,
switching connections with Parkhill,
Iona' distance tolls, were dealt with
and considerable information gained
therefrom.
