R'. ONTARIO FOUND.. Experiences With Certain Varieties of Celery, Cabbage, Corn, head Lettuce, Onions and Tomatoes. (C:onl.ributec) by Ontario Department of .grioultura. Toronto.. Variety tests were 'conducted at the Experimental Station for Southwest- ern Ontario on the following: Cab •bage, celery, head lettuce, onions and tomatoes. Celery. -..Eighteen strains and var- ieties of celery were fisted and four- teen breeding lots transferred from the Ontario Agricultural College. The conclusions reached were that in general the old strains of Paris Golden. Self Blanching seem to be better adapted to muck soil condi- tions than the new strains except where celery is grown for seamier market and immediate sale. The new, more vigorous strains seemed to mature quickly, and when well blanched must he sold • or they be- come pithy and therefore inferior. The strains that proved superior were: Paris Golden Self -Blanching - Eberle; Paris Golden Self -Blanching, Midgeley; Paris Golden Seif-Blanch- ing, Jerome B. Rice; Paris Golden Self -Blanching (new type), Vilmorin; East Blanching, Eberle. The last two strains mentioned seemed superior strain, of the newer type. Tho first mentioned was good for summer cropping, the last ae an easy blanch- ing main camp celery. Cabbage,—The new 'variety of cab- bage, iiarnely Golden Acre, was test- ed against such standard varieties as Copenhagen, Early Express and Early Jersey Wakefield. It was found that the variety is a round head cabbage and cuts at approximately the satne season as Jersey Wakefield, The peen.; -.s mature very uniformly. How- ever, a considerable variation in the strains from different seed firms was Mr. T. E. Hamilton of Chatham days before either Stowell's Got r - was a holiday visitor with Mrs, green or Bantam Evergreen. Head Lettuce.—In the„head lettuce tests three varieties of the cabbage head type seemed well adapted for the district—namely, Iceberg, Non- pareil and New Yorker or Wonderful. The last mentioned proved to be a later strain of this type of lettuce. In the other head types the Way - ahead showed up well. Onions.—Onions were tested on muck soil. Of the varieties tested Southport Yellow Globe and Yellow Globe Danvers seem best adapted when early maturity and total yield. is considered, to the locality. A :train of Spanish onions, Riverside Sweet Spanish, did well for onions of this type. Under test at the Department of Horticulture at the Ontario Agri- cultural College, a variety of set onions, Ebenezer, proved most suc- cessful in the production of good, early, mature onions. Tomatoes.—Sn;ae forty-five strains or varieties of tc;natoes were tested out for adaptabil:*.y for the district. Of the standa; •1 varieties good strains of Eareien seem best adapted to the district. 1; maven one newer variety gives s':•ue promise and should be .tested ••ut extensively. The variety Wayahe-:.produced early fruit of good coi,•t and smoothness. For main crop f canning purposes John Baer and 1 .nay Best showed up well although 1.. o varieties, name- ly Reeves' Seedg and New Red Head, gave excel' t promise in this regard. A strikiae fact was brought out in these test:,. Varieties showed much variation`ae n procured from different sources. Most particularly in Bonny Best F,•roe stains showed much superior til .'t ars. Breeding materiel was transferred from the College to the Experimental Station and tests of the strains were, made. Second generation crosses 'c•f cucumbers v er•e grown both of pick- ling and slicing types and prouaisin:g form early strains will be fcitnd. The most extensive work teles don::. however, in tomatoes of ti.e John Baer-Earliana `cross, "Canadian ' Some seven hundred plants of this variety were grew' and individual records of each plant kept. Some thirty-five plant selections were made from the plants of best type. A caro ful consideration of earliness, ylelrl, color and smoothness was rnea,rJe. These progeny lots will be tester. iii 1925. cis an early variety the"Cana- dian" did exceedingly well. The ear, liest plants produced fruit as earn as Earliana and,the quality and yield Were Bruch superior, It is expected that in the new test lots more uni- for mearly strains will be loured. to ' rriiiic• t as conducted x u w An a pe determine the relative value of ma• nure and commercial fertilizer in cucumber and melon growing and whether or not as good results coitld be obtained from the use of manure along the row' or in the hill, as when mailer° was brcadcasted. The results indicate that =nine is essential in the production of good crops, but that as good results Ina. be obtained cher manure is placed along the row or in the hill its where it es broadcasted with a very great saving of manure.
