Craig, Toronto, bac- ked his car off the easterly end of the structure into shallow water at the shore. Craig did not know that the pier ended there and the first in- timation he had that his sedan was slipping was when he heard a scrap- ing noise. The cal' fell on its right Side in the water. Allan McConnell, Woodstock, ap- peared in Goderich Police Court ch- arged with criminal negligence. He was remanded and released on $2000 bail. He was the driver of a ear wh- ich overturned at Belgrave and as a result his father, John A. Spontaneous combustion claimed its first barn of the season in the se- ction when the fine barn of James Sherwood, 10th con., of Aehfield Tp. went up in smoke. A motorist, pass- ing the barn, had just proceeded a few hundred yards when there was a report and the barn burst out into '•� flames. Sherwood was working in a nearby field, but eould do nothing but look on and see the flames lick up everything. Loss of about $5000 was incurred when fire swept the barn on the . pre- mises of F. Duncan, 4th, con. or Morris, Tp., on Aug. 12.
