ered his resignation which has been

Arnold, the seven -year -ora son of
Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo McCann, of
Mt, Carmel, had the misfortune to
have the end taken off one of his
thumbs recently. He was playing with
the wheel of the wheelbarrow and
sorne binder twine, and the latter be-
ing pulled tight took off the. top .of
the thumb.

After driving his car on the north
pier on his first isit to Kincardine in
25 years, A. E. Craig, Toronto, bac-
ked his car off the easterly end of
the structure into shallow water at
the shore. Craig did not know that
the pier ended there and the first in-
timation he had that his sedan was
slipping was when he heard a scrap-
ing noise. The cal' fell on its right
Side in the water.
Allan McConnell, Woodstock, ap-
peared in Goderich Police Court ch-
arged with criminal negligence. He
was remanded and released on $2000
bail. He was the driver of a ear wh-
ich overturned at Belgrave and as a
result his father, John A. McConnell
of Toronto, was killed and his 4 -yr. -
old son had his leg fractured, and is
_confined to Wingham Hospital.
Spontaneous combustion claimed
its first barn of the season in the se-
ction when the fine barn of James
Sherwood, 10th con., of Aehfield Tp.
went up in smoke. A motorist, pass-
ing the barn, had just proceeded a
few hundred yards when there was a
report and the barn burst out into '•�
flames. Sherwood was working in a
nearby field, but eould do nothing
but look on and see the flames lick
up everything.
Loss of about $5000 was incurred
when fire swept the barn on the . pre-
mises of F. Duncan, 4th, con. or
Morris, Tp., on Aug. 12. Threshing
eperations had been in progress, and
about seven in the evening the ele-
vator became choked, and while re-
pairs were being made, the flames be-
gan in the separator, which soon
inade big headway.
.Clinton town officials received in-
structions from the General Attorn-
ey's Department to destroy the slot
machines which had been ordered re-
moved from two local pool rooms re-
cently, which was done. The men
placing the machines have been made
to walk the carpet and one has dis-
appeared The money in the machines
over six hundred dunes, will be. used,
to help defray the costs incurred.
The Provincial Attorney's: Depart-
nient decided that the machines w-
eld be used as gambling devices and
so could not be legally operated.
