The report shows that violations of the traffic laws, leading ter accidents,. was : (1) Speed too fast for road and traffic condi't- ioins. (2) Motorists on wrong side of the road; (3) Motorists not hay- ing right of way; (4) Motorists -di -iv. ing off the roadway. The above facts suggest that the black picture might be greatly unproved if ordinary traf- fic laws were more rigidly observed In other words, it lies in the power o.f the motorists to males tra:tile conditions safe. None of the vic- tims of the accidents expected what was coming. It may be your turn next! RENEWING SUBSCRIPTIONS This is the season of the year when a large number of subscriptions fall due. We appreciate the promptitude which many subscribers are sending in their renewals. Nothing cheers a publisher's heart more than to have subscriptions 'sent in promptly. it is the most delicate compliment that can be paid. to him. While the ind- ividual subscription price may seem a small matter, when it is multiplied by hundreds it makes a lot of differ- ence in financing. And every subscr- iption sent in promptly reduces the task of bookkeeping, and rendering accounts. So let us repeat that prom- pt renewal of your subscription when it becomes dut will be sincerely ap- preciated. Apple growers have found that in order to get sufficient color and maturity for the fruit, it is necessary to keep the orchard in sod, breaking up only at intervals of five or six ye- ars. And for this purpose the best crop' to use is alfalfa, according to W. B. Somerset, chairman of the On- tario Marketing Board, and a pract- ical grower in the Burlington district Alfalfa being perennial in nature, re- mains in the ground year after' year. Its roots penetrate the oil much de- eper than those of the apple tree and therefore, do not consume much of the moisture supply available to the tree. Furthermore, the roots open up the soil, make it pious, thereby allo- wing the air to penetrate the soil, -hich in turn stimulates bacterial ac - lion. The plant is capable of taking nitrogen ti ge fret n the air and storing it in the roots as nitrates. All good or- chardists apply nitrate fertilizers c+ar, ly in the spring, to promote rapid owth, and tp stimulate blossoming. '. crop of alfalfa is an extremely cheap ,source of nitrate- supe.".. A New Organization An• association of representatives of all county councils in the province tofurther the farmers' interests is likely to be the outcome or the con- ference held by Hon. Thos. L. Ken- nedy, Minister of Agriculture, at the Parliament Buildings recently with several hundred representatives of county councils from all parts of On- tario, who gathered at his bequest to delve into, farming problems. • The Minister declared it would be non- political and would present its' reco- mmendations periodically to the Gov- arnment. He stated it as his intent- ions to have the Department or Agr- iculture in each county co-operate with the farther to help him grow crops especially fitted to soil and cli- mate conditions 'of his county. About Timothy Seed Geo. H. Clark, Dominion seed com- missioner, brings to the attention of Canadian farmers that while this co- untry's consumption of timothy seed is folly 9,000,000 pounds a year, Can- ada only produces 1,500,000 pounds a year, importing mostly from they United States the balance. He goes on to say: At; the present time timothy seed in Eastern Canada is bringing farmers around 9c per lb., while the price in Western Canada is around 8c. per pound. This price is, of cour- se, controlled largely by the price at which United States producers can lay th it prodt ct down in Canada. and this price includes such items as the cost of the seed, transportation„ insurance, handlinr.+; charges, and cum- fonts duty, Are there good reasons fore• these impot;; .tions, •or could that production profitably be kept at hatne 1 TO FARMERS AND TRACTOR OWNERS WE ARE NOW FULLY EQUIPPED TO SUPPLY ALL USERS OF GASOLINE IN LARGER QUANTITIES WITH A GOOD STAND- ARD GRADE OF GASOLINE FROM OUR DELIVERY TRUCK AT LOWEST PREVAILING PRICES, WIT& QUALITY CONSIDERED EXPERT WORKMANSHIP ON REPAIR WORK, AND OVER- HAUL JOBS ON ALL MAKES OF CARS WITH CHARGES VERY REASONABLE. • GAS OILS GRE A.SES+ Moasseaii llurich i.*1.444*+4+44444++4++4+++++,414.+6+++++4.1+ *++f P+4÷k^+II^44+I464 +k44. • Oki Vie' iFt +4.444444 4.4EFtr4FEE.***0944,E4FIENth 1;44.4r4.4 +k 4 + + 4, 4E` R HERALD OFFICE Do YouKnow?hrk That I am the Master Salesman!
