Why Local Paper is Continued Newspaper subscribers often won- der why a publisher keeps on send - ng a paper when the subscription has expired. An exchange thus explains the matter: When a subscription is paid to a certain time, and time ex- pires and the paper is stopped it looks as if the editor doubted the integrity of the subscriber, and nine cases out of ten the subscriber will give the editor a calling down for insinuating that his credit was no good. Rather than cast any reflection against a neighbor's honesty to pay a• small debt it has been customery for news- papers to continue sending the papers after the time has expired. The city weeklnies and dailies do not gen- erally follow this rule as their sub- scribers are at a distance and. do , not know their financial standing. One should deem it an honor to know that his credit is not doubted when the publisher continues to send the paper Should the subscriber deslri; to have his paper discontinued .he should in- form the publisher and;renit to date if any is owing.; BUSY FARMER. P. Heaton recently issued a warning to farmers that they should exercise greater care in ,har- vesting and storing their crops if.they hope to avoid losses through spontan- eous combustion. At the close of •the inquiry into Wentworth County barn fires, he suggested that farmers re- vert tithe old-time custom of using salt in curing crops. Salt he pointed out, aided greatly in preventing fires He also advocated that fire exting- uishers be carried on all threshing machines. Static electricity in the blower of the thresher, which can be overcome by grounding wires, was the cause of at least one fire in Went worth. Feed Sunshine Cod liver oil, the sunsnine subst- itute, is one of the most important it- ems in the properly balancecr poultry. ration. Where birds are closely con- fined during the winter months, as is the case in most parts of Canada, they receive very little direct sunlight and with the rations usually fed they no not receive all vitamins they re- quire. Calcium and prosphorus are two 'minerals specially' '.regpired for laying pullets; and hens in the mama - ,facture of eggs. The digestion and ;assimilation of materials, especially calcium, require one of two things; an abundance of direct sunshine or an abundance of vitamin D.' Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D, and is one of the reliable sources of this type food. •.. r clini G a g Helps Export Dependable quality is an advant- age in the export market. In the past year export og eggs from Hali- fax to Bermuda have held steady de- spite the advantage of lower prices enjoyed by competing expert prod - net. This is a fine indication of the value of standardized grading for eggs and of the benefit of governm- ent inspection of export eggs. Can- adian exporters have secured the con- fidence of the Bermuda market in the quality of their products and the re- liability of our grades. The same is true with respect to the export of eggs to Newfoundland, where quality is winning confidence with the result that important new markets for Can- adian eggs are developed. Weekly Crop Report Live stock generally is reported to be in fairly good condition and most farmers are depending on using home grown products for feed this year. With plenty of roots to add succulen- ce to the rations, and a good quality of roughage available, live stock sho- uld fare well. A report from Grey County indicates that the cold stor- age plant at Thornbury has been the means of greatly increased the •ret- urns from apples. The dairy cattle market is reported active from sev- eral areas, with sales to New York State, Quebec and other parts of Can ada. There is a goad deal of water in most parts of the province and there is not likely to be any shortage fol; some time at least, !Potatoes for Feed •The feeding of potatoes to live sto ck provides a very satisfactory outlet for the Iower grades of the crop.: Second-grade potatoes may be used as a feed for hogs and also in limited amounts for Cattle, sheep and horses as a substitute for grain. For pigs the potatoes should be boiled, mixed with `the grain and fed with other concentrates. A protein supplement needs to be fed with this. Experi- ments indicate that it takes about 429 pounds of potatoes, fed after o cooking, to equal 100 pounds of corn or barley. For the best results in ?wine feeding f,i,, miroh.),'+•;ari t1' rhf- atoes in the ration should not be greater than four pounds to one of concentrates; Thursday] 44rtuar, Itai GreetingsZ WE ARE HAPPY TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY OF EXPRESING OUR APPRE- CIATION PPRECIATION AT THE PAT- RONAGE THAT HAS BE- EN ACCORDED US DUR- ING THE PAST YEAR AND TO WISH ONE ..AND ALL BES!WISHES FOR a Happy and Prosperous NEW YEAR 1 Johnston & Kalbflcisoji I.
