BUSY FARMER NEWS Cleaning Out Couch The eradictation of couch grass otherwise known as quack, twitch or scutch grass, is one of the hardest problems with which the farmer has to deal. Few people realize the en- ormous quantity of couch grass ro- ots which exist in infested soil. Test conducted by the Central Experim- ental Farm at Ottawa show weights of roots ranging from 1,531 to 6997 pounds to the acre—as much as a heavy crop of hay. No wonder it is hard to clean out when it spreads by roots as well as seed. Thoroughly leaning out the roots is the one eff- ective way of getting rid of couch. 13-i small areas this may be done by hand. In large areas by shallow plo- wing and working thoroughly with the cultivator to keep the roots turn- ed up to the sun long enough for them to "kill." Only as large an ar- ea as can be thoroughly cleaned up at one time should be undertaken, as half -way measures are only lost time and Wort. Phone 63 Hay Market Quiet The hay market is reported as ex- tremely quiet throughout Cane.da.The domestic demand during December was light as compared with other ye- ars, owing to the mild weather. The usual movement of hay to lumber mining and road construction camps was not as brisk as in other years. The export demand for hay contiric ues to be poor and unless it improves no real substantial movement is ex- pected o the large supplies of com- mercial hay still in grower's hands in many parts of Canada. Prices being paid for, immediate needs of the trade are much lower than in other years. Alfalfa For PoOttry Alfalfa in the green state has long been recognized as an ideal poultry feed when used in conjunction with the usual grains and rnashes.
