BUSY FARMER ' NEWS Barley Outyields Oats Inperiods such as the present when the making of a profit requires the most careful management, it is of especial interest to note that bar- ley is constantly a more profitable grain crop than oats. This is shown by statistics over a period of the past 47 years in Ontario, during which barley has outyielded oats by approximately 160 pounds per acre, while in years of unfavorable weather, such as 1930 the increase amounts to twice this figure. Undoubtedly of all grain crops barley is least affected by unfavor- able weather. Deforestation Injurious Deforestation throughout Western Ontario was given as the reason for the winter shortage by W. R. Smith, a London engineer, in. an interesting paper before district township road superintendents recently. He declar- ed that too much land -clearing and too much draining was the cause of the ever-increasing water famine. Ten per cent of the acreage of farm lands should be of forest to provide a proper water supply, while the per- centage in some counties was as low as one-half of one per cent. As a re- sult farmers were compelled to drive i cattlee four and five miles to water land to pay a dollar a barrel for water deli0ered. Another danger of defor- estation was the resultant loss of bird life. Birds, the speaker said, were essential to agriculture. It had been said that if they were to go on strike but for a single day, insects would render farming impossible. The inc- reased need for insecticides was a dir- ect resultant of bird depopulation. In Planting Grass _The fine seeds of grasses and legu- mes require a firm soil that is fine in filth, and moist. They are very small in size and if seeded too deeply will produce plants which either lack in vigor when they are emerge above the ground, or are completely smoth- ered. The soil should be firm so that the seed will not be buried too deep- ly and so that moisture will be near the -gurface to facilite the germinat- ion erminalion of the small seeds before the nurse crop becomes sufficiently well established to smother the small seed- lings. Use Only Best Seen Regarding the preparation of ex- hibits for the World's Grain Exhibit- ion to be held at Regina in 1932, L. H. Newman, Dominion Cerealist, ad- .eises sowing the best seed obtainable on a piece of specially prepared gro- end, letting the crop fully mature, cutting and shocking it as usually. The host stooks should be covered, in-otected from weather, and the best heeds threshed by Means of a flail. The grain then should he rust thro- ugh a sieve and later hand-picked to get the itnust uniform seeds, because Weather Insurance Co OF WOODSTOCK The Largest Business ©f any Canadian Company doing Business in Ontario - Amount of Insurance at Risk ea Dec. 31st, 1928, 822,206,275. New Marketing Board The new Ontario Marketing Board, through which the province hopes to assist agriculture by scientific and modern practice, has been named by Hon. T. L. Kennedy, Minister of Ag- riculture. It will consist of W. B. Somerset, H. B. Clemes and Jas. B. Fairbairn, while John A. Carroll will act as secretary. No remuneration is attached to the offices with the ex- ception xception of the secretary who will re- ceive an honorarium. W. B. Somer- set, the chairman, recently compiled a report on the fruit and vegetable situation in the province; H. B. Cle- mes is manager of the United Farm- ers' auners' Co-operative; J. B. Fairbairn is Deputy Minister Of Agriculture and. Mr. Carroll is director of the Crops and Markets Branch. It is further announced that sales agents, appoin- ted by the shippers, but maintained partly by the Government, will be lo- cated in Winnipeg, Montreal, and the Maritimes. Acting as liason officials, these agents are expected to prove invaluable in obtaining for the Ont- ario ntario grower better markets and high- er prices for their products. Too Many Potatoes? Before increasing their acreage, commercial potatoe growers should study the market outlook, advises J. A. Carroll of the Crops Co -Operation and Markets Branch. He points out that the price of potatoes in Ontario is controlled almost entirely by the size of the North American crop, the large proportion of -which is contri- buted by the United States. The 1930 U. S. ,crop totalled about 361,000,- 000 61,000;000 bushels. Indications are that acre age will be increased to such an ex- tent that an average yield of 118 bushels would result in a total og 434,000,000 bushels in 1931, with av- erage weather. Prospects are that the yield this year will be very Iittle be- low that of 1928. The marketing -of that "crop was disastrous. Growers should consider very carefully before increasing their acreage and concen- trate their energy on getting higher yield per acre. . It is expected that only those with low cost per bushel will have profit this year. The sure- st way to decrease the cost per bush - Lel is to increase the yield icer Acre:. 4- Good supply of Smoke Cure on hand Hardware at Moderate Priccs Let Us Show You OUR FULL LINE OF GRANITEWARE AT LOWEST PREVAILING PRICES., 4 4 4.4 Furniture Reduced, I We are offering our Entire Stock of Fura- Iiture at Greatly Reduced Prices, which I' will move it out rapidly.
