and variety. Rather did it seem to
her that she was beholding an evil
thing, a living force of malignity,
winking at her with a thousand wiek-

comment, but her mind refused to
frame a single sentence.

"Rather a stunner, eh?" he smiled.
"Goat a fortune, but worth it for you,
my dear."
"For me?" she ejaculated.
"Of course, who else? I'm going to
have it set in our engagement ring."
The blood receded from her cheek
as she shrank away from hint, her
breath mining fast, her heart heating
with a rapidity which forbade speech,
Mercer's eyes narrowed as he
watched her doubtfully, as might a
man who has some new and intriguing
problem before him for immediate
solution.
"Don't you like it, darling?" he
asked tenderly, with just a 'hint of
disappointment.
A slow flush mantled the white,
young face:
"Oh, yes, it's . . it's wonderful,"
she stammered, "but ... but, Hay-
den, we are not engaged." The words
came quickly as she turned away,
shaking from head to foot. She heard
hint draw his breath with a quivering

nervous dread swept through her. It
seemed a vast period of time before
he spoke, his voice low but a certain
hardness had crept into it.

his eyes narrowed with suspicion, his
bloodless lip* drawn in a thin, straight
line. With a sudden anovensent he
caught her hand.
"The old man was right. Its that
damned fellow Pyecroft who has turn-
ed your head!" She felt his lingers
quiver as they tightened savagely upon
her wrist, heard the sharp intake of
breath as he drew her roughly toward
him. She braced herself to resist,
when suddenly a new voice .broke in:
"Oh, so there you are, then. I
thought I'd find -you, ha! hal"
With a startled exclamation, Mer-
cer turned to glare viciously. at the
grinning Pyecroft, who nodded ami-
ably in return.
"I felt sure I'd find,, you," he re-
peated, sinning at Muriel, "I was
rather alarmed lest you should have

frightfully unpleasant place, you

Mercer. "Miss Mainwaring is well

he gave was the quick tightening of
his mouth and the clenching of his
hands as he stood rigid waiting for
her answer.
With a desperate effort, Muriell
forced a smile:
"It's nice of you to suggest it, Mr.
Pyecroft, but I really don't feel ener-
getic enough for tennis. Let's all walk
back and see what Guardy's doing,
shall we?"
Mercer drew in his breath with an
audible hiss as his muscles relaxed
and he flashed a contemptuous 'sneer
at the other.
Pyecroft, . totally undaunted and
grinning broadly, fell in beside them
as they commenced to walk back.

Muriel turned to look back along
the path she had taken. The white
walls of Barrows Farm stood out with
vivid clearness, a familiar landmark
and the only habitation visible.
Yet even as'she gazed the dazzling
white seemed to fade into a sombre
g1ey. It was as if a cloud hacl sud-
denly descended to hang like a pall
over the building, ominous and lis -
quieting, transforming a scene of
peace and happiness to one both cold
and sinister.
But as quickly as it came it went.
' The gun shine out again in all his

of siervous relief. At the same moment
she 'became aware of Hayden.

to fear of falling but is merely because
the eye tries to focus on two things at

duces the same kind of confusion that
happens when the eyes fail to con-

for example in some kinds of poison-

curious fact pointed out by many ob-

Baker's theory is that few people are
giddy when looking down from an air-
plane, although they may be higher
than on any precipice and with far
less support. This is due, Mr. Baker ; on some enure
