Eritz, and flan Ward, were visiting friends in Dashwood, the fore part of this week. Some of the boys'drove to Exeter last Friday night and enjoyed them- selves on the skating rink. Mr. Louis Well, who has peen visitingfriends awl relatives here for a few months, left for his home in. Cavalier, N. D., on Wednesday. Owing to the thaw the roads have become nearly impassable. It is dangerous for man and beast to travel along the public highways. Mr Justus Mellick has moved in- to the house he recently purchased. Ve welcome Mr. and Mrs. Mellick to our town. Extensive preparations are being made for an Easter Ball and Supper to be held in Ran's hall on Monday:: evening, April 4th. Dr. Buchanan has disposed of a quarter of his section of land in Manitoba, the price received being ten dollars per acre. Messrs. Rau, Sipple and Schafer were at the Bend for a few days this week, helping mine host Bren- ner to make "wurst." Miss McIntyre ' of Parkhill bas taken charge of J. Preeter's milli- nery department, and will supply the wants of the ladies in that line. Mr. William Ching of lot 16, S. B. Hay, has sold his 100 -acre farm to Mr, Silas Stanlake Sr. for $4,500, Mr. Ching will move to Manitoba. The Director's of the Hay Branch Agricultural Society met in the Town Hall en Tuesday afternoon. The only business transactea was the revision of the prize list. Mr. D. S. Faust has a beautiful range of goods for Easter presents, such as easter: eggs, and , chickens with feathers. Something new in Zurich. Call and see then ; prices reasonable. Mr. Joe Bedour, of the Sauble line, captured 400 pounds of trout in one week, recently. The long cola winter' has made fishing on the lake a profitable undertaking this winter. In packing apples for England, a box of 50 lbs. is reported to the Ottawa Department as the most commendable size. The box should be long and wide, not deep, to show a large surface of apples. Miss M. Book of Hensall surprised her parents with a sleigh load of young folks, recently. The even- ing was pleasantly' spent 'in "times of amusement and a dainty lunch- eon was served at midnight. Mr. Casper Walser intends mak- ing some extensive improvements to his barns this spring. He has sold some of the buildings and in- tends erecting others, more suit- able and convenient, in their place. The local flax mill is expected to shut down shortly. The owners have nearly $8000.00 worth of fin- ished material on hand and have been waiting for some months for cars to ship, but up to the present have been unable to secure any. A young lady explained to a printer the difference in printing and publishing and in conclusion said ; "Now you may print a kiss on my cheek, but you must not publish it." With that he locked the fair form in his arms and went t0 press. I wish to thank the people who have patronized me dur ing the year 1903. Mr. John Deichert Jr., reports business very good in his line this spring! He has a competent staff of hands employed and is always busy. Give Jack a call when yon need something new and stylish in clothes. An agreement hat been signed by the radical railway committee of the city council of Stratford, and M. Sloan, of Chicago, whereby work will be commenced on an electric railway, connecting Stratford, Mit- cheIl and St. Marys, by July ist. The road to be finished by Dec. 1st. The Grand Lodge of the A. O. U. W. met in Toronto the latter part of last• week, and a motion was passed for the opening of sick and funeral benefits in connection with the lodge. Ladies can also become members of the A.'(). U. • W. now. Mr. John Preeter returned Monday evening from Toronto, where he was attending the meeting. The time is now here for the boys to stir up the football again. Last year the team did .fairly well and there is no doubt that if the boys unite and display a little more interest in the game, a first-class team can be put into the field. We have the material in our town and all that is lacking is more unity. It will be in order to call a meeting for organization purposes, and this cannot happen to soon. A very pleasant event took place at the home of Miss Mell Koehler on Friday evening, the occasion being ar social gathering given in honor of the Hensall young people, who numbered about twelve ; there were also a number present from Staffa, Exeter and town. The even- ing was spent in music and games after which a dainty lunch was served. After thanking Miss Kceh- ler for her kind entertainment, all went home Well pleased. with the evening's enjoyment. The question of securing farm help in this part of the country is becoming more serious every year. The cause of this is, to some extent no doubt, owing to the fact that so many of the young men are going west. Another reason, and one which has no small bearing on the matter, is that many of the young fellows are going to the cities to work in factories, etc. The wages paid to farm help, in this vicinity, have materially increased the last few years and now a good man can get from $20 to $26 a month, while formerly $10 to $15 was considered sufficient.
