If some farmers have reason to complain about the shortness of. their Drops, they should rejoice that there is some compensation therefore, in the liighprice of grain, It is years since prices were high as they are to -day ; in fact a short time ago people would have laugh- ed at the probability of wheat reaching $1 a dollar a bushel; yet it is easily that to -day. We say this with full ltnowledge of the fact that the foundation for his accomp- lishment' was laid .over thirty years ago„ when Clerk Maxwell, in an address to the Royal Society, defined the eharaoter of the ether waves and predicted the possibility of wireless telegraphy by means of electro -magnetic waves. Nor are we forgetful of the fact that in 1887 Prof. Hertz, by the announce- ment of his discoveries, earned the right to givc, his name to the etheric waves whioh Marconi and his con- temporaries have turned to such good account. Marconi's experimental work in transatlantic communication dates from that notable day in December 1901, when from his position at the top of a lofty promontory at the entrance to St. John's harbor, Newfoundland, he received from his station in Cornwall, England, an agreed-upon signal, the letter S. Encouraged by this .success, Mar- coni commenced the erection of a powerful station at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, where four huge bra- ced towers were built at. the cor- ners of a square, and an elaborate system of aerial wires or antennae strung from them and led down to the sending and receiving station below thew in the center of the square. A year later actual wire- less telegraphy communication was established between this stat- ion and England, and dispatches were sent by the Governor-General of Canada to King Edward, the King of Italy, and the London Times. Subsequently, a message was dispatched trozn President Roosevelt to King Edward, and it was announced that regular trans. mission was about to be inaugurat- ed. Apparently the time was not yetripe for this, and during the past four ;years the inventor has been devoting himself with unre. lenting energy to the perfecting of his apparatus.
