THE TFT.1?HONIaa Oi.V' I'HE FARM
There is no matter eating g the line
' of general irnprovenlent( in which
Ontarto fanners aro more interest-
ed at present than they are in that
' of telephone comrntiuieatien ;. It is
well that this is so, because, there
are few improvements `that count
for so, both in the way of pleasure
And profit for the farmer as docs
this means of quick communication
of messages'. To the ordinary re-
sident of a town or city a telephone
is a mere luxury or convenience ;
ho is within easy reach by walk or
street car of his friends, his physi-
cian, or the stores from which his
houuehold supplies come. , The
fa.tnily on the farm is in a totally
different position. The nearest
neighbors are quite a distance off,
the doctor and the veterinary ,• sur.
;eon --either of them maybe need-
ed in a hurry are far away, and
the railway station at which goods
intended for the farm frequently
arrive, by freight or express is; in
most oases, some miles distant. ,To
be able without along walk. after
e hard day's work in the fields, to
consult with a neighbor about
questions which arise during seed
time and harvest is an advantage
of no little importance ; to be in a
position to order by phone repairs
for a broken binder or mower may
easily save more than the cost of a
phone fora whole year; to secure
immediate information as to mar-
ket prices may spell dollars on a
sale of hogs or cattle just ready for
sale, and the ability to bring in a
doctor in the quickest possible
tithe tray be the means of saving a
life.
The death occurred at Hensall on
Tuesday July 16th, ofMr: y 'James
Sutherland, aged 83 yours; 3 months
and II days. The deceased had been
ailing for a couple of years with
stomach. trouble and that coupled
with his extreme old' age was the
cause of his death. Air. Sutherland
was horn, in Scotland and lived at
Eanbro and Manohester, Ontario,
before going to E'ensell to reside.
He was one of the pioneers' of that
place, locating there when the
railroad Bret came through. His
building was the first one erected
after the station and he carried on
a general store business. Owing to
old arae he a few years ago gave up
the postoffice, his son George being
appointed in his stead. Mr. Suther-
land was a devoted member of the
Presbyterian church and a stauioh
Liberal, He leaves to moor p heir
loss his beloved wife, one p xaind
one daughter, Geo. and ttie,,
The funeral took place, from 'the
family residence Hensall on Thurs-
day to the Presbyterian Church
where services were held and from
there the remains were taken to
Hensall Union cemetery.
